D'uccle Thread

I posted on it and hope it will pick up some new people. This is a great breed and I had a hard time getting into them even though Janelle swore she tried last year to convince me. That Porcelain color is what drew me in and then everyone said they wer such a sweet breed so I took the plunge and OMG, here I am and loving it! And now I have others on my SC thread also owning some of these beauties so I am slowly converting the population.

I still am not too sure about showing though. I suppose I would do it to help get the breed more recognized but I am not competitive so that is not a factor. And having shown horses, dogs, flowers and Guinea Pigs has shown me that some judges.....well, they often do not know the standard of what they are judging. But it should be all in fun for me and not taken too much to heart, I suppose. Probably only the winners agree with the judges!

Amy is right, she is converting a few of us on the SC thread. My family hopes to become the owner of some Mille Fleurs d'Uccles this coming week. A person in my area is selling their d'Uccles to make room for another breed and we should be getting them by the end of this week.
We have only seen pictures of the birds so far and I would like to share them with your thread and see what you think....
This is the year old rooster we will be getting....

This is the year old hen....

This is this years hatchling cockerel.... I know he has a lot of solid white feathers still--will he molt these? Are they a problem?

And last but not least is the little, this season's, pullet....

Of course they will be pets but we would also like something we could work toward for showing if my daughter gets interested in that. I would appreciate peoples thoughts...

The beards and muffs are really nice on those first 2! I am sure you would have to work with the color on that first hen but very do-able! That last photo of the pullet is very nice from what I can see. But you know I am new at this breed. I like the white on the second roo but know it is not something you can show. It may be something you can use later though.

I think you are getting a nice bunch of birds. And you can probably find some others to go with these to work on individual flaws that you need to change. That's the fun of it, isn't it? Trying to create something you feel is close to perfect while being to enjoy the affection of sweeties!

DH was helping me water the birds tonight and the d'Uccle tractor needed water so I opened the door and let them all come running out. Several flew up on the top of the pen and went running over to check him out as he leaned on the roof. They knew him, of course but wanted to see if he had possibly thought to bring them treats. He never has but they always have hope! He was just so impressed at how they liked to be petted and he could just pick them up and cuddle on them without a bunch of screaming and wiggling. He is falling for them!!!

Thank you Amy for putting the d'Uccle thought in my head. Hopefully this works out and I will be getting them on Thursday! My DD loves our silkie and I hope she enjoys these little birds as I really think I will!

I can not wait for yours to feather out!! When I hatched some this summer for someone else(2 of which I am getting back) I was told you could tell males and females and I do remember some had stripes--is that true for yours? Can you tell male from females yet? What an exciting breed! Your chicks are so pretty!!

In the ABA SOP is there a standard for Blue Mille Fluer and if so what year was it added.
I know that it is not in the APA Standard yet.

That may help my daughter with her selections of what to keep and what to get rid off in the spring.

Ok, thought I had the pronunciation down right with "dew-clay" but have since heard a couple of experienced breeders use "dew-cuhl". Can someone clarify? Figure if I own them I ought to be able to say what they are. :)

I must admit this has been a question of mine too....

Experience counts for very little when it comes to pronunciation, I've heard old timers call them "dee-uncles" and that makes me crazy. There isn't even an N in the name. You're going to hear every possible arguable way of saying it, so I figure pronounce it the way you want to. I always say dew-clay because it's a Belgian/French spelled and pronounced word.
I figure the important thing is to be able to communicate what bird you're talking about........period.

Here are the Mille Fleurs my daughter fell in love with at Crossroads this weekend - and we brought them home! LOVE these little guys! The cock is 2 years old, and the other is a pullet.

Personally, I raise LF Brahmas. But the bantams are growing on me!
