D'uccle Thread

First of all, Webster is a dictionary and not an Encyclopedia. Big difference and what do they know about raising chickens. Who did Webster dictionary ask to get that pronunciation.

Secondly, when I showed this year, the professional judge and everyone there pronounced it dee-OOKle and so that's how I pronounce it.

Also, think of it this way---for those that don't know the breed comes from a Belgium town called Uccle. The d apostrophe means "from". Just like d'anvers come from Anvers, d'uccles come from Uccle.

Say it however YOU want to say it.

Thanks Nate!

I had a long talk about this with a linguistics professor. He said ultimately, it doesn't matter what the 'correct' pronunciation might be. The important part thing is to use the pronunciation that is most easily recognized by the majority of listeners.

So if the oldtimers have been calling them dee-OOkles, and other variants are dunkle, dookle and de-OOsel, then dee-OOkle is most readily recognizable by the majority of peeps.

I personally prefer the elegence of doo-CLAY. Since I want to communicate effectively, I call them dee-OOkles.

Also, I took an inventory of pronunciations at the Crossroads Poultry Show in 2011. Again, dee-OOkles crossed all bounadries. Only one person called them doo-CLAYS and she admitted she had just started breeding them.

No wonder they were all known as millies for 50 years, despite the other colors.....

Good reply.
I am one of those that try to pronounce things they way they were originally meant to be pronounced. I also looked up from where these birds came from and then looked up how it was pronounced in their language.

My maiden name was Paradis Pronounced EXACTLY like Paradise.... not Pear-a-diss Drove me crazy growing up. So I "try" to be respectful of names and their origins.....

I "try" to always say Dee-OOKle when I say it.

so Dee OOOOkle (Scooooby dooo) is the right way to say it.

In my mind, I was saying Deee uckle. I haven't had to say it out loud before. Now I feel prepared and will also know what people are talking about with other ways to say the word.

Ohhh...Saying it in your head and saying it out loud is NOT the same.

Over this past weekend I messed up the name a few times and had to out loud correct myself ....

I am not Dutch so that is my excuse!

BTW - I love love love my little pullet.... I (to the dismay of my husband) will be looking for a few more. I have 2 Roos who I think are rather adorable and need to pick one to keep. But either way I need more pullets

I don't like saying "d'ookle" either, I just refer to them as my mille fleurs when I'm speaking to family and friends. The show is the only time I have to constantly correct myself as I called the "dee-ussels" for a long time and it got ingrained in my head. Dee-ookle, de-ussel, dew-clay, whatever you want to call them they are still beautiful birds no matter what.

P.S. This pronunciation subject comes up every few months when new breeders come on here. Hopefully we can correct them in a nice way in the future, rather than writing in red and laughing at others
