D'uccle Thread

Ok, so I'm trying to introduce the silver or creme gene to my d'uccles and I think I have done it. What do you think?
I bred my blue mille roo

to my half silky buff hen

All the chicks came to what I initially thought was blue millies, with the exception of one reg mille. (Pay no attention to the partridge silky) These are the chicks at birth. Note the silver one standing in the front.

These are the chicks now. Keep in mind that both grandmother hen, nor the mama, has any markings- they are solid color, except for blue feathers on mama's tail, more than likely a result of the colombian gene from her goldneck father. So these are all marking of the mille fleur.

And the silver one now. He's the one to the far right. Looking like a cirton or golden.

Any takers?
So, did I successfully add the creme gene?
PS- the comb and toes are back to d'uccle standards, as are the vulture hocks. Only one chick has poor vulture hocks.

beautiful birds Loralyn!

Ok, 3 of the four d'uccle babies have hatched ( sorry the gold one is still wet looking,,, there will be more pictures coming!)
Just at first glance, looks like 2 black mottled and 1 gold neck ( or is that something else when it is golden colored) Figured it is too gold to be a mille or will that change? My neighbor had 6 different pairs so these could be any that came from his d'uccles.
Do I worry about combs right now- are they pretty indicative at this age in this breed? If so I have 1 hen and 2 roos. In comparison to their full silkie sibling that is a day older. Also one of the blacks has a light beak and one a black beak...any reasoning?

thanks

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but down may darken over next couple of days. A gold neck chick will have brassier gold head with a paler, yellow body, while a reg mille will have a tan head and grey body, that's any shade of grey, from dark to light.

On another note, can someone explain why some reg millies fade and others don't?

my half silky buff hen

What was the other half??? Were some of her feathers super soft, with extra silk under the saddle and on the sides of it? Reason i ask is usually the Silkie crosses have "hairdoo's ".

(I had an EE which i think may have had silkie in her somewhere) Her head was wide like that, with the bushy neck too! She had half silk, half normal feathers but her comb was normal pea and normal green EE feet, normal toes. She had big nose holes though, and the round shape except she carried her wings on her back, with the tips touching at the saddle.?

If you go to my profile, the avitar pic with the hen closest to me is her daughter, the hen in my lap on my profile is the momma. Lap babies. I lost the momma recently during a freak heat wave. :(

I did go look and there are faint spots on some of my pullets...some more than others. I still hope my (techenically my youngest son's) girls end up as pretty as Crystal. One with the most faint spots also has a swollen eye. She opens it, but keeps it closed most of the time (that's how I noticed it). I brought her in, used water and a clean cotton to wash the eye, then applied some eye antibiotic and released her back out. Hopefully that'll take care of it and if it's some kind of infection, the others have already been exposed so didn't see the need to isolate.
Hopefully it's only a scratch or something in the eye that will work its way out and not something worse. (researching on BYC for possible problem/solutions now)

The other half of that hen is my goldneck d'uccle. She came out with all smooth feather, that super bright gold, 5 toes, nice beard, but black skin. I bred her to my blue mille roo and got the chicks you see, they have right comb, right toes, right vulture hocks and even the skin is no longer black! I was surprised how little time it took to get back to d'uccle type. Time will tell whether the comb is the correct color, but that may have righted itself because the chicks no longer have black skin.

thanks! so it is possible to get a silkie cross with smooth head feathers.

Yes, I have a silkie/d'uccle cross that has a smooth feathers. The only way I know it is silkie is by the crested head and the black feet. Cute as a button. I will try to get some pics of her.
