D'uccle Thread

Maggiemo, my mottled cochin chicks are about the same age as your mottleds and the coloring looks alink but the body shape is way different, so hopefully they are d'uccles. I think your milles may be pullets, but it's pretty hard to tell. Of my six chicks I have 4 roosters, but I need more roosters with fun colors so it's okay. Plus dad is pretty mellow so hopefully they will be too.

Aschenfire, how do you get them to stand so pretty when your taking pics??? Mine get all slinky or lay down, ugh!!
LOL these are in a pen of babies which has been barely touched, so I just opened the front of the cage and took the photos once they got more comfortable. Catching them at the right moment is the challenge when you take pictures that way :)

Hey Lori what do you think of this guy? I bought him from the breeder in NC and I swear I think he has something mixed in him even though all he had were d'uccles and booted bantams...something about him makes me think he has old english in him...I am giving him away to someone today and keeping 4 of his daughters. I didn't make a mistake, did I?

Did you show him? How'd he do in shows?
I like him and don't think he is a mix. He's a little like in the hackles & saddle, maybe, and could use a little more white.
Do you know age? He should have some white spots on his tail if he's been though an adult molt.
I do love his lack of wattles and nice beard.

If he made nice girls, then giving him away won't be a bad thing. Especially if you have some nice boys in the grow out pen from the air-mail babies ;)

Hey, I have a few questions about my new chicks/chicken. I am new to having chickens and they are my house pets.

This is Celeste. She arrived today and is about a year old. Is her color Black Mottled and is that still a form of Mille Fleur coloring?

This is Aster. She is one of the two chicks I got a couple of weeks ago. She is 6 weeks old. Is she just considered Mille Fleur or is she lemon? Her brown appears lighter than that of other Mille Fleurs. The Silkie babies love the D'Uccles :)

....and this is Ivy. I have no questions about her. I just wanted to show her off :p .....wait....I got one. Do you think Aster and Ivy will be bearded? I am leaning to yes.

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I did show him in February as a cockerel (he's changed a little since then) and he placed dead last at the State Fair. I was really surprised and I'm assuming the judge saw something I was not seeing. No remarks left on card either which was aggravating. I also showed him (friend's son showed him) at the County Fair and this d'uccle looking bird with big wattles beat him I was so surprised!.

His daughters are looking good and just starting to get their spangles. I'll be able to decide who to keep in about a month or so, only keeping one!

Air mail babies are doing awesome, I know for sure I have both boys and girls :)

Hi PeepSqueak and
welcome-byc.gif
! I don't know much on mottleds but for the mille fleur chicks...it does not look like they'll have much of a beard as my birds usually have a lot more fluff on the chins at that age, with feathers growing horizontal to the eye-line but who knows maybe they'll surprise you! Welcome to the thread :)

They are FULL d'Uccles. The father won BV at Ohio National poultry show and the mother one RV at the same show. All my d'Uccles are full breed. Last year I had a Marans get in the pen and I never tried to pass them as full breed, I sold them at an auction and sold some to people that just wanted pets. That was my milles and not the mottled. I may sound a little snippy, but I take offense when someone questions my birds I would never sell try to pass off a mix as a full breed.

Who were the judges? Were these APA or ABA shows?
Judges aren't always familiar with d'Uccles, so you can't always base your keep/ let go decision on a judges input.
I show mine at at several shows in multiple states with multiple judges. I track results according to the numbered leg bands on my show birds to compare different results.
Another thing to keep in mind: Every molt can produce a significant change. I have a hen right now that lost every show as a pullet but does quite well as a hen. Some breeders say she's the better bird to breed, because the pullets that win may not keep their show qualities as they age.
That's why I keep a mix of hens and pullets as breeders. And why I regret every sale of a quality young bird, because it could be a PERFECT show bird in a year. But I don't have enough room to keep everyone <sigh>
