D'uccle Thread

I posted a little while back about these two, maybe five month olds. I was not sure what sex they were. One is definitely a cockerel as he has started crowing. I pretty much expected him to be. The other looks like maybe a cockerel too but has some differences. It has not crowed yet, It has very small waddles but a big and strange looking comb. The feathers on the lower back at the base of the tail feathers are short and round. The other has long pointy feathers in this area. What do you think? Are they a mix?
I also had mentioned that they were clipped in a horrible way! The cockerel had all his leg feathers cut of but they have started to grow back. I plan on letting all their feathers grow back.

This is the cockerel

This is the other. It moves so fast I can't get a very good image but maybe you can see the Back feathers

Her are both, the cockerel is on the left and "other" is on the right.
they are both 100% cockerels. coloring and comb size are all dead give aways

Thought I would share some pics of my blue and black mottled D'uccles . These are my first and I just love them . They came from shipped eggs so was so happy most of them hatched , think they are about 4 months now . The silkie is always leading the pack .

Oh well, at least I will have two tiny guardians for my three hens.
Will they be able to mate with the buff brahma hens? Or is the size difference too much?

Very nice looking boy. I have one like that also

Definitely 2 roos. I am, guessing one is just a late bloomer and less dominant. I have 2 barred cochin cockerals that are just like that, one obvious roo, and one wanna be lol.

LOL! Yes one does seem less dominant that the other. I am just hoping and praying they stay good. I got rid of the last one because he was so agressive.
I have changed "her" name from Rosé to Diego. I am naming both after artists. The other is Vincent.

Love D'Uccles, and I will be getting some soon, but I have a few questions.
I already know I mainly want D'Uccles. They are my favorite breed ever, and beautiful to boot! IME they laid well for bantams (almost every day, even in winter), laid large eggs for their size (still small though), didn't ever go broody (good for egg laying). Plus are the sweetest, most personable chickens I've ever met. (My favorite D'uccle from McMurray was nicer than most cats and some dogs, and kept laying an egg almost every day till she was six or seven!) But I still have a few questions.

Firstly, the D'uccles I had were from McMurray, but this time I will probably be ordering from Ideal. I have read many different opinions on D'uccles egg laying ability, and to a lesser degree their personality. Is my experience with D'uccles (good little egg layers, wonderful personality) likely to change if I go with a different hatchery? I'm worried the birds I end up with own't be like the ones I have had previously in one or both those areas. Since I am in the city, and can't have a huge number of chickens I hope they will lay decently as my last ones did, and also be just as sweet.

And since I'm probably ordering from Ideal, and they have many color varieties, that leads me to my next question. I have only had Mille Fleur D'uccles. Does the egg laying or personality change between color varieties? On one thread on here (I believe the super long D'uccle thread) a couple people mentioned that some of the fancier varieties don't lay as well, and weren't as hardy. If all the colors are the same I would probably get a few, but if not I am fine with just getting Mille Fleurs. Are there any colors to avoid because of bad personality, decreased egg laying ability, or generally a lack of hardiness? Which colors are the most comparable to the Mille Fleur in these areas?

I have a mille fleur from Privett hatchery in New Mexico. Very sweet and great egg layer. So are the three porcelain girls that came from there. They were a year old in April this year. My friend had a mille fleur from McMurray the same age and as far as color she was darker, her base color and had alot of black. I know you can get sexed bantams from My Pet Chicken but have never ordered from them. Somebody on the Northern Ca. thread ordered from them and was happy with them.

Quote: Ok, that's good to know! My problem with Privett is that the minimum order is 25-30 chicks (Ideal is 15), and you can't order less than 5 of each variety. I have looked at MPC, but I think they are really overpriced, and I can give extra females and the males to my parents who have chickens. So even with ordering extras it is still cheaper to order straight run elsewhere than sexed from MPC. Anyone have any experience with Ideal as far as egg laying ability and personality? What about differences in those and hardiness between color varieties?

I should clarify that the cockerel I had to regime was a silver Sebright, not a D'uccle!
