D'uccle Thread

Hi Trip Farm .... yeah, I was not trying to be a snot in my earlier post to anyone who had the knee jerk reaction to critique the bird in my picture - but I did mention this is NOT my "good" roo and I knew about the issues and didn't post him up to see if others thought he would be a good breeder - just that the two came over to keep me company. I didn't want a standard/comparison run down of him.

I know your tone was very nice and I took no offense at it - just didn't want that info. I DO know that some people who breed and show are way too nasty to people that post general pictures and I was trying to avoid their input.

I do have her separated now - for 3 weeks - and won't collect eggs for another full week - and she is in with the the "good" roo and that for nothing more than little ones that I will enjoy here on the farm - so even breeding for the farm use I am careful ... but most of the year I have a fully mixed and integrated flock that get the run of my 5 acres.
oh no... I wasnt meaning to "critique" him..... I was just letting you know that when you said "poor quality" he really isnt... he is just a different breed....thats why he "looks different"... cause he is.... <GRIN>.....
So I didnt want you to think he was poor quality... especialy comparing him to the others on the thread.... so I was kind of sticking up for him.... <hahaha>

we show.... but we also let ours run.... my son cant stand to see the "show chickens" penned up.. so he takes the judging hits on "broken feather" etc.... because he woudl rather see them out eating bugs and "living a life" than caged....

ha ha then he has more "potential" than I thought - but I don't want those waddles on any babies - so he is kicked out of the breeding pen for the next month.

He is a sweet guy .... but all the little D'uccles I have are really sweet. I do like the breed. Wish my hen laid more consistently though. She is just over a year and I get only 2 eggs a week from her.

Does anyone know the sex of this mille chick? I'm praying it's a hen otherwise I can't keep it. :( it's about 3 weeks old!

you cant tell very well at this age.... watch for pointed feathers on the neck and saddle area.... as soon as you see ONE pointed feather... its a boy..... It kind of looks "roosterish" but I have seen MANY hens look just like this at this age...

Yes.... he has the right things for the Booted Bantam traits.... but not for the Duccle.... so you are right to not want him bredding your hens... all of ours are sweet too.... Duccles arent know for being great egg layers... so I woudl say thats average... some lay every day but not many... they are great mothers though !!

Broody beyond compare.

LOL.

Silkies are renowned for it, and so she should go broody for you; however, they are individuals and make up their own minds.

Thanks! I have 4 of these girls right now. They are a week old. I am not sure how many I will keep but am glad to know that I can look forward to broodiness.
