D'uccle Thread

The d'uccles and the ameraucanas had been together a weekish. The d'uccles were unvaccinated for mareeks. They started being a little lethargic and died a few hours later....

Here's my bit of insight, for what it's worth. Each farm has its own little germs running about, and the birds that are raised there develop immunity. But when new birds come in, they come in with their own set of "bugs". One or the other won't be prepared for the new bugs and die.

Also, some babies just have a failure to thrive thing going on. For reasons we don't know about, perhaps there are incomplete intestines, etc. So while they may be eating up a storm, inside, they are just dying. I saw this firsthand when my new foal had a set of lethal genes. The poor little thing didn't have a chance, as her intestines went nowhere. I've noticed that every time I get a paint baby chick, they always die. While paint is not a lethal gene , there may be a combination that creates a bad scenario.

For the most part though, I'm going with the new bugs syndrome. Do you put electrolytes and probiotics in the water?

Sorry about your babies...

One of my D'Uccles has a very bare bum. I went ahead and cleaned it, and put vaseline on it. Any other advice?
Vaseline in an excellent idea. Sometimes the medicated chick feed gives rise to sticky bums, so I grind up the corn and go heavier on that than the medicated. It tends to dry them up in a day.

Your picture looks like it's lacking a tiny little diaper....

Ok, thanks for the advice. She also is having trouble pooping, so I put sugar water in the waterers to try to loosen things up.

Hello all! I've got a reverse trio of mille fleur bearded duccles. The pullet is one of the sweetest chickens ever- call to her and she comes to jump into your palm. 1 male has black in his hackle feathers and is a real pain but the golden hackle feathered male is semi-sweet. The first chick hatched from them had rapid breathing and the other chicks in her set seemed to know something was off with it. They didn't lay with it and generally stayed away from it. In my experience hatching other chicks if a chick is breathing rapidly and doesn't seem to want to sit/lay down it ends up dying within a few days. Because it has only happened twice within about 3 years I think it is failure to thrive issue. I believe that genetics can sometimes affect chicks as well even after they've made it through hatching.

The chicks the d'uccles were with were hatchery vaccinated. Could they have been contagious for mareeks due to thier vaccination & passed mareeks on to my chicks?

Sounds more like failure to thrive as mentioned. They may have been showing symptoms without being noticed. Sometimes once chicks get past the first week we don't watch them as closely such as how much food they are eating, how much they are drinking, etc. Nothing on your part, just how it goes sometimes.

nope, chickens can't get spread mareks because of the vaccine. the Vaccine is made with Turkey Mareks, so prevents the tumors of Chicken mareks, without the vaccinated chickens spreading it. It sound like the chicks were just too weak to thrive.
