D'uccle Thread

SilkiesForEver, what questions were you asked for showmanship?
Here are some questions I was asked:

Is squirrel tail accepted, or unaccepted?

It is accepted, but only in certain breeds.

(My judge only asked the following question if you got the first one correct.)

In what breeds is it accepted?

Japanese bantams.
What sex is your bird?
Be more specific. (i.e pullet, cockerel, hen, or cock.)
If your bird was a duck, what would it be called?

Pullet: Young duck.
Cockerel: Young drake.
Hen: Old duck.
Cock: Old drake.

What do I mean when I ask you what the capacity of your bird is?

The capacity of bird is how far apart the pubic bones are, and how 'big' the abdomen is. You are measuring for egg production when you do this.
(If you got that one^ right, my judge would ask you this,)
Does it matter if you measure the cocks?

Yes. (Why?) Because the male bird would pass on his traits to his female offspring.

Hope this helped! If you have any more questions, let me know!

How did small animal master showmanship go?
You're very welcome.

It went well, I met allot of other kids who had never shown anything but what they qualified in, just like me. It was VERY encouraging. I won't know the place I got until tomorrow at 6:00 pm. But, whatever place I get, I'll be happy with it. It was a REALLY fun experience.

You have a good out look, d'Uccle's are good birds to use, friendly and easy to work with. Learn the as much as you can about them and then try a project to work on, as to how to improve your line of birds. Congrats to you...I just sold some chicks that are going to be used as 4-H birds...Love it

Do you have to belong to 4-H to show? My kids have some chickens and I've wondered about letting them enter them in the county fair but I only hear about kids in 4-H doing this. We do Boy & Cub scouts so I didn't want to have to join 4-H just so they can enter the chicken show...we are going to have the chickens regardless of 4-H. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with 4-H (I belonged as a kid), but I don't want to have to attend anymore meetings and activities than I already am committed to.

Thanks,
CG

They can show under the open class.
They can't compete against 4-Hers (at least in my area you can't), but they compete against all the other kids in open.
Fair is a ton of fun. If you want to do it this year, make sure you don't miss the deadline, mine are all way passed.
