D'uccle Thread

mine did fine with others. some of the cocks will sometimes even be dominant over larger ones and be the top breeder with the large hens as well.

Really? That's surprising, that they breed with larger hens. Do they fight with other roosters, like, to the death or until someone's brutally hurt?

well you are dealing with social dynamics here, but recently when my naked neck rooster got an eye infection it caused him to loose status, at that point a duccle male of mine stepped in as top cock. the older rooster is back to his status as top (he does have some vision loss in that eye but not enough for them to sneak up on him anymore) so the one duccle is back to the same status as the others, a peripheral male that will occasionally copulate but is usually kept at bay by the naked neck. and this is in a confined yard they are not free range (i have dog problems). i have had occasional problems with a really bossy duccle hen but that was probably just her. for the most part they mix well like any other breed.

Okay, thank you! I don't let my chickens free range either because the ones I breed don't have good eye sight due to their crests, and I like to know where they are at all times.

I was wondering, do they do well with crested birds? I am going to breed Sultans and silkies, which both have big crests, but I don't want to have to get rid of my d'Uccles because they're being jerks to everyone.

What do crests have anything to do with birds getting along? It all depends on how you introduce them and the individual birds temperament. If you put any birds into an established coop of D'uccles they will most likely be little bullies unless the newbie puts up a good fight, maybe due to size or breed. I've had silkies together and standard hens with D'uccles with no issues. In your case you may want to add the D'uccles to the crested birds established cages and hope they can figure out who's dominant before there's too much damage. But with that in mind, ALLOW them to peck for a bit. Only interfere if it gets nasty.

I heard that the more aggressive breeds will be really mean to the ones with crests. I will slowly introduce them to the place so they get to see each other and for a bit I'll let them out with each other and then seperate them for the night.

It is true that crests are prone to being picked out but D'uccles aren't typically aggressive. Of course there's some but not too many. I had one that I literally could not combine in any coop because she would peck each bird including standard Wyandotte's so hard right on the head. She was truly one of a kind RIP.

Cute picture!

Jeez. I don't think much will stop me from getting them now. But I would like someone who wants some because I'll have to order more than I can handle. They need to either be in Oregon or drive all the way to Oregon to get them.
