D'uccle Thread

Will wait until closer to time and see what I have. My black d'Uccles should be old enough then to decide who stays and who goes

And I'll prbably still have a few SQ millies as well, since I'm getting ready to hatch a few more

I have two boyfriendless SQ millie girls and the 2 SQ girlfriendless white roos lol. I have plenty of Porcelains, Seramas and silver sebrights and OEGB.

I'm strictly d'Uccle except for a few silkies & showgirls.

I have several MF cockerals looking good but quite young at the moment. Am waiting until mid-Septemeber to pick the 'keeper' for my #2 MF flock. Tennessee is a gorgeous roo but he's 3 years old now and I worry about losing him.

What do you guys think of our three d'uccles? Quality? Show potential?

This is our little mis-fit Porcelain hen Snowball

edited to add: I want to ask another question (agian) can I keep Porcelain/Mille Fleur/Blue Mille Fleur in the same pen? and what are the genetics behind that?

Ducks - Don't know about the genetics...

Oreo is GORGEOUS - I think he MIGHT be show quality - would have to let someone else say for sure with experience.

Fudge - doesn't look to have the shapliness I see in other D'uccle hens...

Snowball - would be a good breeder potential - not show though she doesn't have feathering on the 2nd toe - which would be a DQ I believe someone earlier said.

All are VERY pretty though!

The sand is a great thing. They can dustbathe in it, and it keeps poo from staying wet & stinky. And then later, when you till the dark sand into the garden beds? Happy veggies!!

I always feel sad when I see a chicken that's never scratched in the dirt. So all mine get to play outside (despite the sun-bleaching that occurs) and scratch around. They also get supervised free-ranging. I have too many to play with everybody, but there are certain birds that insist on a little extra attention. One millie hen gets mad when I pay attention to my showgirl silkie, and she flies up onto my shoulder to scold me. The d'Uccle voice is so unique!!

There is a huge difference in the foot feathering on my d'uccles that are adults and get to free range in their fenced area of the yard, and my half growns who are largely in pine shavings in and under the coop. The young ones have soft stuff to scratch in, but the older ones have hard Missouri Clay to dull their nails and foot feathers on.

As far as personality goes, my ones with defects seem to have the best personalities, I'm thinking I just need to have a 'personality pet pen' and a 'serious breeding only' pen. I mean, after all, I DO consider them my pets, and the showing/breeding thing is something I'm hoping to learn along the way. I'm going to the state fair next week to see what kind of d'uccles Missouri has to show. I missed the 'late entry deadline' by one day since my scanner was defunct. Since I've only attended one poultry show, it's probably for the best anyway that I stay on the sidelines and watch and learn before I try to jump in and do a line dance.

Emmet and Ezme look GREAT! Another pullet should be no problem, other than getting her to you. Guess it will require a visit from C? I do think your C and my C would have a blast together!!

Emmet's foot feathers look like he's been playing in the KY mud

Can you check and make sure Emmet has all his toenails? Tennessee's babies usually do, but every now and then I find one that's missing a toe nail (a defect in d'Uccles).

Your porcelains have a pretty color and good pattern. Wish the foot feathers were a little heavier on the pullet on the floor. Do any have feathering on the 2nd toe?

Jet looks more blue than black in that pic, despite being such a darkly black chick! I never expected the gold to show up. The Partridge parenting is definitely coming out on her neck! How's her foot feathering? She's obvisouly as spoiled as the millies!! Are the partridge silkies as spoiled as well?
