Doug, your killing me with those temps...What are your highs like during the day? Hopefully your girls will get in gear and start laying for you soon, then you can show off your babies and make all of us jealous with baby pics

7-14F for daytime highs. Special treat we should be close to freezing tommorrow.

We have to really watch for frozen eggs whe we collect then now.
If frozen they become dog / cat food.

I tried to snap a couple extra pics and the focus is a bit better on these. The little "pinguin" baby, 2 older cockerels (blue and black) and you might be able to see the little mille girl tucked in there too

Wow, Our lowest high so far has been 12* and that's WAY to cold for a little old frail (haha) person like me. Although I do know what you mean with the frozen eggs...My heirloom Dominiques and Buckeyes are our egg sorce and I've had a couple I collected that were frozen n cracked, so we pitch them to the dogs also

The pink on the toes is very cute! Are they d'Uccle babies, too?

It is not as cold as where I have worked at the top of Ellsmere Island.
I was lucky when I was there it was in the daylight period.
Temps to -50C to -60C (-58 to -75 C). Don't stay outside to long.

I have also done some survival taining living in improvised shelters at -45C (-50F)
Yes a candle can keep you warmer in a small ice cave.

Off subject; Are you familiar with the "Chimnea" fireplace type decorative thingy with the metal or clay with a door that is covered with wire. Well, I have mine in the house during the winter, do not use it for wood only candles. But I love the flicker of the fire and believe it or not, the "stove" heats up with a couple nice candles and it does help heat the room. We do not have to be concerned with certain pussy cats from walking near, on , over that little flame. We used it especially in the ice storm years ago. I would have to get up every couple hours to fill the kitchen wood stove and I could leave a candle going over night without being concerned about the what ifs. The kids, cats, what if a jacket slipped or mitten and if the candle base broke and we could have a wax fire. (Paranoid me)
I can fall asleep and know that it will only leak down on the bottom of the 'stove'.

Now I just think that middle pink toe is the bomb! How cute, wonder if the feathers will come in light or if the toe will darken?

I have a couple mix breed hens that have 1 middle toenail pink. Only the toenail! Funky things Genetics play isn't it! Keep those pictures coming, I love them!!! er...WE love them!!!

My babies that had pink middle toes, the pink changed over as they grewq and became dark toes with dark feathers. The light color was only there for a couple of weeks.

Not sure what my blue & yellow babe will grow into, but it has adorable toes, too. They are all pink though. Everyone's legs are pink. I'm hoping that's the influence of their all white daddy. I'm hoping for as much white as possible!

Just went to town to get 5 bales of shavings, a bale of straw, two bags of layer feed and a bag of Knockout scratch. Spent about $75 on the chickens and $5 on us, LOL. Cleaned out every coop because of the ammonia with them being stuck inside for weeks. This winter is awful. Made me look at properties in southwest GA, LOL. It's not that pretty down there, not like where we are in the mountains. I can't wait till we get some warm sunny DRY days so I can let the little ones outside. At least their coop is clean with fresh water and feed for everyone. Just in time for rain to start.

Question: when I get my D'anver eggs from Aubrey, if he doesn't have enough porcelains to fill the order, would I be better off asking him to fill in with lavenders or regular MFs? My Cochin who will be living with them is lavender, though I have no idea if I'd ever hatch her eggs, even if she had a pint size hubby.
