D'uccle Thread

Hey everyone! Thanks for voting for Babymama, my porcelain hen. She won Miss Chicken 2011!!!

I'm shamelessly promoting d'uccles in whatever way I can!

Off to bed now. My chicken chores took longer as all the wateres needed refilled due to the heat wave-sauna.

Im very sad to say that, Fiesta, my little girl match for Feisty, my little cockerel, has passed on. I don't know why she died, my guess being a crop issue. She was cremated over a very nice little campfire. She was a little precious girl and I hope to get another in the future.

For the time being, Feisty has found refuge and love with my little OEGB pullet, Cleo.

RIP Fiesta. You were cool.

I hate losing birds for no apparent reason. And why must it almost always be a girl? When you hatch a roo or three for every female, the female loss impacts that much more. Of course, there are soooo many more things that go wrong with young pullets, though. Their lives are more complicated.

I hatched some cuties (3 millies & 1 black) over the weekend, and this morning was greeted by my first Goldneck of 2011. My GN pullet is showing really well despite too much white on her (IMO). In fact, all my girls kicked the boys butts at the show last weekend. Cracked me up! Guess I need to breed some better boys. Sadly, I have a HECKUVA lot of them to choose from this spring, due to a 3/1 ratio of males over females in my hatchlings.

I now have a dedicated roo pen, where all but the millie cockerels are growing out. The millies are getting preferential treatment since I have so few of them still. And even though I hatch a few more each week, I hate to let my half-grown cockerels go for sale yet. What if these first ones are the prettiest ones? Decision decisions.
Am I the only one who agonizes almost daily over who to keep and who to sell?

I hate to do this...but I need help. What color is this little D'Uccle chick?? She was hatched from Mottled Hatching Eggs, I purchased from eBay. All the other eggs, hatched out black and blue mottled. She is 5 weeks old.

Does anyone have any clue, what color to call her?

She is the chick, in the far left, of this pic.

She is getting a drink of water, in this pic...but, all the little black/white chicks pictured, are her hatchmates, from the same ebay eggs.

So sorry about Fiesta!

Beau, Lizzie and JoBeth are 21 weeks old now. Beau hates the camera. He does this threatening headbobbing thing and shuffles toward me till I quit trying to take his picture, the little snot. Lizzie is a camera hog and JoBeth just is nowhere to be found when the camera comes out. No eggs from them yet. Cetawin was going to take them, but realized she has nowhere for them to live so I'm keeping them for the time being. Lori, that means only one pet carrier in your van on the 20th!

Here's Beau doing his head bobbing thing at me:

I don't know. He does have too much black, but then, he's hatchery stock. I love his comb, though. Wish JoBeth would pose for pics-I think she is the best one of the bunch, from the little I understand of this breed. Lizzie is too small, but has a huge personality.
