D'uccle Thread

I'm so bummed, my 6 month old blue mille cockeral died yesterday. He had some respiratory issues I was treating with antibiotics, but he didn't make it. My little goldneck pullet is coughing too, and I'm treating her as well, I hope I caught it early enough with her. I should have started treating the boy earlier, but he seemed to be doing alright and I am always hesitant to use antibiotics unless totally necessary. Lesson learned I guess. Last year I had this roll through too, but the antibiotics cleared everyone up and they all made it. It seems like the D'Uccles are affected more for some reason, no one else gets sick, (cochins, silkies and a polish). Any advice?

Shoot, I have no advice. I came home today, this being the first truly typical monsoon Pacific Northwest fall day, to find 7 of my babies dead. Little babies, only several weeks old. These guys have been doing great! They are protected from the weather, have a cozy and warm place to hang out and eat, fresh water, clean bedding, and BAM. It rains and a bunch die. It happens every fall to my rabbits, too. One of the main things I am (well, Nature is) selecting for in all of my stock is resilience to weather changes.

Dang.

I'm sorry about the loss of your little rooster. It's hard.

Do you guys have livestock testing labs in your states? We have them in California though University of California Davis - they do necropsy for free just to keep the livestock and public healthy and safe.

I'm leaning toward mycoplasma. From what I read all the symptoms match and one of the really unique/weird symptoms is tiny bubbles in the corner of the sick chicken's eyes, which I have seen. Once you have it, it's always in your flock, even if no visible symptoms are there. The only way to get rid of it is to cull completely which I do not want to do. I guess it'll be survival of the fittest.

I had another chicken from the same group die a couple months ago and had her tested at the State Diagnostic lab. They weren't 100% sure, but thought maybe lymphoid leucosis, althought there were no tumors so who knows. She tested negative for Mycoplasma and had nothing going on with wheezing/breathing. These guys sure do keep us guessing! Sorry to hear about all those chicks, that is terrible.

Lea and Coffee... so sorry to hear about your babies. Total bummer. Hoping for the best moving forward.

As discussed before, more baby pics. They are 5 weeks old plus a few days. There are two black and white ones. One has gold leakage on neck and the other does not. So far look girly to me... lets keep hoping.
first pic, black with gold leakage (phantom) is in front.

Phantom is on left (gold leakage) and marvel is on right.

Last picture... Phantom is on left (leakage) Marvel is on right and Midas is screaming roo in the front...
