Duck Article Brainstorm Session!

Ducks need clean drinking water? My ducks prefer the muddy soup in the drainage ditch over the clean water i give them. And if the drainage ditch is dry and i put out a bowl with clean water they all hop in, wash, poop and then drink the water.
My ducks want their water dirt and muddy!

Ducks liking something is a poor indicator of what is good for them. Domestic ducks are evolutionary testaments to their keepers, not themselves. Some of ducks favorite things are things that could kill them. They love eating nails, string and panty hose. They are absolutely fascinated whenever I use the chop saw. They love hanging around and under my riding mower. And yes, the worse the water is the more they are attracted to it. Just don't confuse "ducks need clean drinking water", with "ducks want clean drinking water"... :lau

OMG, that would be great, and I would love it, though I can imagine it might offend ssome. :lau

But it couldn't be any more offensive than the dirty truth. Owning ducks with at least one drake in the mix is shocking and unexpected to many people. Perhaps if they knew what to expect first they wouldn't be so upset by their drake's behavior. Perhaps they would be more accepting of his amorous behavior and be more inclined to keep him. I think many drakes are given away/culled for simply being drakes and not necessarily acting up in ways that are dangerous to humans or the flock. Hmm... I will think on this.

I was surprised, not offended, by the behavior of my drakes as well as their genitals. One of my drakes is a terrible bully, a naughty and aggressive - but: If you let your ducks roam around in your (extended) yard, you need such a drake to protect your ducks! My girls have their heads down foraging through the tall grass, so they won't be able to see the hawk coming down on them, but have no fear, Donald (the drake) is here! ;) He stands guard all the time, he alerts the girls to any threat (including me!) and he breaks up fights between them. For this i am thankful to him and offer him some extra meal-worms…
