So I have a 6 month old (possibly) Black Swedish and she weighs in the range of 4-6 pounds. For the last two week she has started to waddle weird and I checked her legs out last week and nothing seemed unusual but a couple of days ago I found her limping and hold her foot close to her body. I knew something was wrong when she started to lay down more than usual. It is her right foot but when I let her and the rest of the ducks out she will walk right out but not put a lot of pressure on it. None of the other ducks are doing this but I gave her half of a pill of Tramadol that I got from the vet from one of the other ducks. She is eating and drinking and pooping like normal it is just her foot of leg that is bothering her. Can anyone tell what is wrong with her?

Hello Shyana,

The middle toe seems to be swollen. I also see a small dark dot on the center joint. There are some small perforations on the web, as well. When a bird cannot walk or can't put weight on it's foot, it is usually due to bumblefoot.

It's hard to tell for sure just from a photo. Do you notice any swelling on that center toe? Bumblefoot commonly presents with a dark scab or nodule under or on top of the foot. Look for anything that could indicate an injury. Sometimes, bumble foot will start with just swelling, then it will darken with the flesh that is infected.

Also, slowly squeeze each part of the foot and notice if she jerks or flinches with pain.

If the foot is not the problem, then it could be a leg injury.

Diagnose the problem first, then you can decide what treatment you will do.

God Bless :hmm

Looks swollen for sure...I don't see any bumble?....
She has an extra toe next to the middle toe..She might have broken or sprained her toe?...Keep her resting...If she is eating and drinking fine?...Time will heal her...

i am sorry to hear that she is having troubles
i agree with HPJ, check over he foot and leg very closely
it could be a sprain, it could be a thorn
while you are trying to figure it out i would soak the affected foot/leg in warm epsom salt baths, dont let her drink it its a laxative
but the epsom salt will alleviate swelling, draw out infection and help with pain
it isnt a cure all but it could help while you are trying to figure it out

Good Luck

What are they eating? is she getting enough niacin?

So do you think its bumble foot. I'm most likely going to take her to the vet today because I don't want her getting worse.

I have dealt with bumblefoot many times. Sometimes there isn't a dark scab, but infection is growing inside, on top or under the foot. The bird will feel pain and limp or sit a lot.

The vet will get to the root of the problem. If it isn't bumblefoot, the next likely issue would be a leg injury. This is what happened to one of my hens. My Vet determined she had a leg injury, treated her and she was fine. However, she still gets flare ups of pain in that leg, so I have to soak it in Epsom Salt bath, then, rub it with a cream for a few days.

We love our birds!

God Bless to you and your little duck.
