Forgive my ignorance, but are mallards and rouens the same thing? My husband went by our local TSC today and saw they have what I narrowed down to these two breeds. He said he always wanted a “duck head” looking duck. The one with the green head(which I’m under the impression is a drake, exactly what I would need). Could anyone show me pictures of your mallards or rouens as ducklings and adults?

They are not the same thing, and can be pretty difficult to tell apart as ducklings. Rouens shouls be about 4-5 times larger than Mallards when fully grown. Supposedly their eyestripes are different, but some strains haven't quite bred towards that.

It’s not a very good picture, but does anyone know what they may be?

Rouens and mallards are not the same, although they look similar. Mallards are smaller and can fly. Rouen hens tend to have two black stripes by their eyes, Mallards have 1. Rouens are heavier and can not fly (besides small bursts of flight when excited). I have an adult Rouen hen, Daphne. I don’t have any duckling pictures of her as she was grown when I got her. However, here are 2 adult pictures!

Btw, Daphne was 6 lbs when she was weighed last fall, though she’s gotten a bit fatter over the winter.

I highly recommend Rouens as a breed. Daphne is decently smart (for a duck), friendly, and full of personality. She’s also LOUD, but it’s ok as I live in a rural area :)

P.S. Daphne is considered a common or “utility” Rouen. There are “exhibition” Rouens that are much, much larger.

These are my mallards. Mallards are a bantam breed of duck, and they are what most breeds of ducks except muscovies are domesticated from. Rouens are a heavy breed of duck, originally bred as a table bird. There are three different varieties of Rouens: Standard, Rouen Clair, and expedition. Mallards also have a variety of colours. Another difference is that mallards can fly, whilst Rouens wouldn’t usually fly (only standard would possibly be able to fly).

Both Rouens and natural mallards have the same colour. Drakes will have a green head, white neck ring, a chestnut breast, grey feathers, and a black tail/back.

The Ducks will be brown, with light eye stripes, and buff on there face down to there neck. They will also have be v laced, the tip of the tail will be slightly lighter, and the same goes for the underbelly.

It really depends on what you want them for, and what you expect to get out of them.
