Hey all,
A couple days ago I went out to the duck pen to collect eggs. Sadly I noticed one of my Welsh Harlequins was dead inside the nest Box. Seemed to have died sometime that morning. I did a necropsy like I do with any bird of mine that dies mysteriously. There was no sign of external or internal bruising or puncture wounds. There were no feather strewn about either. When I openedher up there was a lot of blood in her cavity, I mean a lot. Looks like she bled internally right after she laid an egg because there was no egg in her tract, just a bunch of yolks to be :( Seem to have happened suddenly since she was halfway in the nest Box when I found her. Has this ever happened to anybody else?

Take a look at this.

Some trigger factors are feed rations low in phosphorus, potassium, protein, and energy levels while rich in calcium levels, resulting in cardiomyopathy.

A laying bird may be low in calcium (hypocalcemia) and uses up the last of the calcium in their bloodstream as the egg hits the shell gland, causing a sudden draw-down and heart failure occurs.
