Duck eggs at a farmers market?

he entire Lav Orp line needs work as it is new and a project. So yes you would still need to set up a breeding program, bring in quality stock, cross out, back in, cull heavily those chicks who meet the improve, ent you are working on. So on and so forth for a few years to come. This isn't to say the eggs couldn't be offered for sale. However they would need to offered for a low reasonable price and listed as a project with what is being worked on. That's of you want to be honest about the breeding stock and quality of the potential hatchlings.

This is a wonderful explanation of what "project" types are. Thank you so much for posting.

Actually we do big_smile I might contact them...

I think you would find at least one or two bakers (or chefs) whose whole day would be made by someone enthusiastic about selling them free range duck eggs. Especially places jumping on the "local/slow food" bandwagon - which many more places are FINALLY starting to do.

You are welcome, it is fun to work a project breeding, but sad to see eggs selling for crazy prices at the same time.

Until I read your explanation I didn't quite "get" it. Now, I think it could be VERY neat. It is funny, because I see those Lav Orps in SO many threads & think, "gosh, they just don't look right," now I know why.

The more I learn about breeding the less I know.

You and me both. My head spins some days and I just walk away and return when I think I can take more reading and figuring out the next step.

CelticOaksFarm: I got my eggs from a BYCer her user is bargain. Im not sure how good her lav orps are.

Yes but they are a project color, far from perfect no matter who is selling them. You would still need to set up a breeding pen, bring in blacks, cross out and back in. Then cull all that don't measure up and do it all again. 3-6 birds total from one source is not a breeding program made. We have 4 different sources for BCM chicks for our sons project, with leads on 1 or 2 more sources. The Lav Orps we are setting up have 3 sources, not all are Lav, but hoping to better the body type and then back to pure Lav.

Try putting an ad on CL. If you can find the right buyer you won't have to advertise more then once. I was lucky and found the right buyer the day I listed my eggs. She buys every duck egg I have to offer (usually 1 - 2 dozen a week). I sell mine for $4/dozen but think I could have asked $5.

I see lots of ads on CL for lower priced eggs ($1.25 for chicken and $2 for duck) but I still mark mine at what I consider a fair value and I've never had an issue selling them. I even had one guy drive 45 min. one way to buy some.
