I just came back in town to visit my family and my dad and I noticed that the duck we have’s eyes are bloody and it looks like she’s blind. There is also a gash looking thing on her head. We had 6 chickens, 2 died, One with a gash on neck, one with no wounds. There are 4 chickens left and we’re wondering if one or multiple are killing the rest. They were all completely fine together when I lived here, I don’t know what happened. It looks like the duck is beyond help so I guess I’m just looking for advice or ways my dad can put her down humanely. I’m going to post pictures, they’re so heart breaking :(

It sounds as if one or more of your chickens are cannibalizing the other birds. I would separate her from the flock, clean her face and head with warm water and apply antibiotic ointment. Once she starts healing you will have a better idea as to the degree of her injuries. Right now, I would give her a chance for survival. Someone needs to take over responsibility for these birds rather than whoever has been doing so.

My dad takes care of the chickens and duck and always makes sure they’re taken care of and happy. We have had one previous flock that got killed by foxes so he completely rebuilt their coop and got new chickens. The one doing it is an americauna. The issue with separating them is that we don’t have another area to put them in. He doesn’t see them at pets, so I unfortunately don’t think he would buy antibiotics for her which is so upsetting. If I didn’t live in a small apartment in another state I’d take her and help. I just feel so stuck because I raised that baby girl and seeing her like that has me so sick. The only reason he didn’t get rid of the chicken sooner is because he has no clue chickens could cannibalize. I read that they do it if their area is too small but it’s a huge area for 6 chickens and a duck so I’m really not sure :(

I would cull the Ameraucana if it’s doing this to the other birds it will just continue
what if we have 3

I just looked and we have 3 ameraucanas. 2 of them I physically watched peck her. The other one hasn’t. The 4th chicken i’m not sure what she is but she hasn’t pecked and had a different/lomger comb. We don’t know what to do with them :(

nope I wouldn’t rehome id get it a friend keep the injured one and try to rehabilitate her because id say 80% of the time the injured ducks gets neglected, euthanized, or “free range at night” which is just feeding her to the coons. As for the bullies they go to OCS out of coop suspension, in another area where they can live with the see no touch.

But because I try to be sensitive to other people’s options on culling birds, I use alternative approaches. But if it was me and just me… the bullies will have a field trip inside the pot. Get some real life experience of what it feels like to be boiled

the duck won’t eat :( Do I still keep the chickens together? We only have one coop so we couldn’t keep them all separate. After watching for about an hour, we saw 2 (the ones I posted) peck at her. 2 of them haven’t yet. Should he cull the 2 doing the pecking. I’d hate to see that happen but They’re gonna kill the other 2 that are left. I wish I knew someone in Idaho that would take the sick duck :( my worry is that she’s not eating and seems really really miserable, she won’t leave the pond because she knows they won’t get her there
