Duck feeding suggestions

Hello!

The backyard of my home backs up to a private 1.5-acre pond. My property line includes a minimal amount of the pond, roughly 6x8 feet. The neighbor that owns the majority buys ducks but doesn't care for them. He puts them on the pond but doesn't feed them or have a shelter. He's lost countless birds to predators, but doesn't care; he merely replaces them. I live in the south which has mild winters, but the ducks are very hungry in the late fall and winter. I've been secretly feeding them during those times for the last 15 years; I feed them healthy floating duck food. The pond owner doesn't want me to feed them as he said they don't need it. But, I felt I needed to start feeding them when I saw them several hundred feet from the pond walking in the street looking for food.

I will be moving soon. I'm worried about the ducks after I leave. Is there something I can plant in the pond to sustain the ducks over the winter? Should I add minnows to the pond? It would be best if I could do something that the pond owner couldn't tell I did. He's a jerk and only gets ducks because he likes how they look on the pond' he doesn't care about their well-being.

All suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you!

Kim

Can you contact animal control or any animal welfare agencies in your area? You are a saint and what he is doing is cruel and terrible. Domestic ducks are not prepared to live out in the open and forage for all their own food. My ducks panic if they're away from their food dish for half an hour . This is heartbreaking and I would just try whatever you can to report his inhumane behavior and shame him!

Thank you for your response. It's obvious you understand and appreciate ducks. Your ducks are lucky; I bet you take wonderful care of them! Thank you for suggesting I call an animal welfare agency; that's a great idea, I'll call them tomorrow.
