Duck Hatch-A-Long ~ Wanna Join?

I put 6 more eggs into lockdown tonight... And had 5 call babies hatch yesterday.. There was 6, but one died right after piping the shell.. AND I put 17 call duck eggs and 5 goose eggs into the incubator..Ahh... babies.. gotta luv em..

So, I stuck a dozen mixed eggs from my ducks in the last empty space in my bators. Fertility test #3.

The butters were fertile, just not any of the pastels. I've got a bator being shipped to me that I'll use for hatching....but my test bantam eggs are due to hatch Thursday and I'm not sure it'll be here in time

Day 8 - candled my eggs tonight. They were mail order and I don't really want a lot of ducks. 4 at the most. Out of my 10 eggs, 6 are developing nicely. Good veining and quality development. I'm happy. I can handle it if 4 don't make it. I figure if I have more than 4 hatch, I'll simply Craigslist the extras.

That would be a very good hatch rate for shipped eggs! I'm thinking of ordering some runner duck eggs...just what I need, another breed! What kind of eggs are you cooking?

Okay, so apparenty I have Rouens, not mallards. That's just fine with me. We love them just the same. It shouldn't surprise me. The clueless girl at TSC tried to tell me that the runner duck labeled container was all boys and the pekin box was all females?! She also told me that all the runners were mallards. Jeffrey (the black one) is definately not. I was just going for healthy.

Oh, the crested guy, that's Mo (short for Mohawk). Thankfully it looks like it is a perfect little pom on him and not off center or covering his eyes or anything like other's I've seen.

There was a girl at our ranch and supply one time that was telling some people what kind of chick this was, and what kind that was, and so on. I laughed and started pointing at chicks, naming the different breeds....she was way off!

Me too (want to see pics that is) I've decided I'm just doing trial warming periods of eggs as so far no luck. Luckily I have 7 saxony eggs ready for lockdown tomorrow and so far still movement all 7. Maybe it's because I won't have enough brooder space so my call ducks are just saving me some worry. Would be nice to at least see a fertile one, sigh.

LOL...yep, I've got an egg warmer, too. I wish my problem was lack of brooder space...I have nothing in a brooder yet!!

It's a good thing I left my Call eggs in the bator....at least 4 of the 5 are still going!!! I am going to have to remember to put on my bifocals when candling!!!

The first two test batches were a week apart. I've given them two more weeks, hoping it makes a difference.

I cant get pics to upload onto here.. I will try again tomorrow when im not on the laptop and see what happens...That, and I need batteries for my battery eating camera... But... just a teaser.. THEY ARE CUTE....

Ok...tonight I am setting 12 butterscotch Calls, and 8 pastels. The pastels are the ones that haven't shown fertility yet.

The 4 butters due on the 17th seem to be doing alright. I'm not sure about the 5th one...I do remember sticking another butter in the next evening after setting the batch, so that might be the one. That would explain why it looks different.
