Duck Hatching Chicken Eggs

Out of 6 eggs I ended up getting two chicks that successfully hatched. The duck seems to be a good momma so far...I don't think she even knows the babies aren't her species! The premature hatcher didn't make it, unfortunately. But the duck still seems to be broody so I'm going to let her have a break and if she's still interested in a few weeks maybe have her hatch more babies.

This is good news! I currently have a Duck who is broody on 3 chicken eggs. So I marked them and when she covers them up to go swimming I take the duck eggs out. We dont currently have room for any more Ducks, but chickens we do. We don't have any opened water that the ducks have discovered yet, just a pool so we will jsut keep it shallow until the chicks are a bit older. We have a swamp at end of our property but the ducks don't know how to swim so therefore never discovered it yet. Here she is :)

Soo cute... hope she hatches them.... noway an adult duck can't swim... they maybe didn't go there yet... ;)

haha I have no idea why I put they couldn't swim, meant they can't fly. Not really anyway, their bodies are too slanted when they fly that they don't make it far. Maybe 4ft off the ground and a few feet distance. But she actally abandoned the chicken eggs and we are hatching them out in the bator.

Hi, my runner duck became broody about 1.5 months ago w/her own unfertie eggs (no drake old enough yet to fertilize her eggs). So, i put chicken eggs under her, she has discarded the bad eggs, I have been candling them so I know what you're good and what your bad. She finally hatched one chicken egg about 1 wk ago & when i found it in the morning it was flattened. She didnt get off of it & let it breath, i was so sad. Now she has 4 more chicken eggs & i candled them 4 days ago & they were all viable, one was due to hatch any day. I candled them this morning & they r all dead inside, no movement. She has been getting off of them alot in the past 2-3 days, i was afraid of this happening, since she should of been on "lockdown". this is her first time being broody. maybe she just doesn't know what to do?

Some ducks are just naturally better mothers than other. But, as it's her first time, and they aren't from her own species... I wouldn't lose hope. :)

Thanks Butteryscotch for ur encouragement. I have more chicken eggs that are going to lockdown tonight. I am thinking of putting a couple under my runner duck & see if she can hatch these. I want her to hatch an egg, so she grows confident. What do u think? Thanks
