Thanks everyone for the great ideas. I believe I have it all figured out now. I have all the materials except a 12x12 heavy duty tarp for under $20 - so I am staying under the $100 mark. Whew!
I am sinking the center post so that it stands up 2 1/2 feet above the walls. That should make my 6 foot boards span the 5 1/2 feet (of ground).
I am trimming the corners off the top of the center post to make an octagon. I have metal brackets to place on each side of the boards to hang them from the post. (I was surprised I could not find hangers with bottom support.) The outer support is the V made by the pallets.
I am tacking the plastic snow saucer onto the top center. (I was the only one that used it anyway.) Then, I am tying the tarp over the top.
Now, all I need is time and energy.
