Duck Killer

Wiener dogs are serious hunting dogs. They are used to get foxes out of their holes, and they will kill them too. They can beat any cat at mouse and rat hunting. They also tend to get more aggressive with age, when they have been hunting and killing things. That's when you have to keep children away from them. My aunt was raising them professionally in Germany. They also kept some on their farm for rodent control and would loose some each in fox holes. They sometimes get trapped and can't get back out. If you are lucky you can dig them out. You cannot keep them with poultry, because their hunting instincts are way to strong.

I do have 4 dogs. 3 are hunting dogs and 1 a herding/guarding dog mix. They do go along well with my large ducks and hang around together. I guess I just got lucky. I had them interact with each other when my ducklings hatched, and I think they consider them part of their pack. You just never know what you end up with.

MysticalMom, I'm sorry I was a little bit harsh with you. Just wanted to make sure you don't do anything stupid in a fling of a moment. Good to hear you have calmed down. Sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear about what happened to your ducks.

Wiener dogs are serious hunting dogs

That's true as well as many breeds of terrier. I once saw a terrier running loose heading towards a large flock of ducks and I got seriously concerned. The ducks were all resting, happily, near a bunch of reeds and trees after getting their morning feed and I knew that as soon as that dog ran through or around the brush at least one duck was going to get hurt or killed. I wish more people who get these kinds of dogs were aware of their strong prey drive and their power-packed little bodies.

Fortunately, I think someone got to the dog before it discovered the ducks.
