Im starting to think just continuing to use my submersible dirty water pump every couple of days might be easier

It probably would.
I dinked around with pond filters for a few or more years,
gleaning info from a koi pond forum.
Ducks are different than fish, but still the same principle of getting the poop out of the water column(which includes both the pond and the filter).
Learned a lot there.
