I would take a picture of my pond, but it is a simple hole dug in the ground with a tarp lining it! We have a real liner we plan to turn into a better pond in the spring.
Has anyone heard of using a moat of pond around the coop to keep out mice? We have mice coming through the door flap to steal the duck food. In my chicken coop the chickens kill anything that comes in there like that, but these ducks must just calmly watch as the mice come and eat all their pellets. Short of taking it up at night I am not sure how to stop feeding the mice population. I don't think having them around is healthful for my ducks either.
Does anyone have any experience making a duck moat? Will mice swim? they seem to drown easily enough.....I keep finding them in the duck water and this concerns me.
The way my set up is, the front of my coop is well sealed, the back has a door open to let them go to their predator-proof pen. But small things such as mice can get through the fencing. So a "moat" would bar them from the coop.
It would mean the ducks would have to swim across the moat and perhaps swim more often than they do currently, but heck, they are ducks! (Muscovy)
Do any of you pond builders have ideas for me?
