Duck Pond Thoughts...Comments Wanted

Thanks for all the input. I got the idea for the pump from Wifezilla's previous post about the filters she was using. The purpose of the pump/filter would be to keep the water itself clean. This is the one I'm thinking of using...http://www.mvwgs.org/filter.htm except I think I'd use the plastic scrubbies instead of the lava rock.

Oh and as for the fish tank, I only have fish in it...a couple of small algae eaters, and a bunch of different tropical fish. My kids have accidentally dumped a half a container of fish food in the tank (on accident of course

), and although it got stinky for a couple of days, it then cleared up and went right back to normal. (I was sick the first time it happened or I would have cleaned it up, now that I know it takes care of itself, I don't bother). Of course, this has only happened a couple of times, but it still seems to support my pond theory. I wouldn't care if there was gunk on the bottom as long as it didn't smell and I could keep the water moving and somewhat clear. I'm also thinking of adding some kind of waterfall to it.

Sorry for the long rambling, but it sure helps to get the input from others to focus my thoughts.

Just some thoughts, as I've done some informal research on it, but some folks are running aquaponics systems with ducks, fish, and greens. You can grow your greens for your ducks, and feed the fish with the duck poo, with the excess ammonia et. al. being used by bacteria and veggies.

I eventually plan to run a 300 gal. "pond" system, with my ducks and some catfish or bluegill, hopefully running with no electricity (well, maybe some for an aerator). Changing out about 10-15% of the pond per day to the garden and trees should do the trick. If you can grow 40 catfish in a 55 gallon drum, then just about anything is possible.

Just don't expect it to look like a swimming pool.

ok guys and gals you can filter a duck pond. I do , Filter can be a 55 gallon plastic barrel tucked away behind fence or shed. Its easy to build. One barrel will handle 500 to 1000 gallons. We filter ours and it works fine. If interested let me know and I can tell you how to build it. Its easy

Hey, do a youtube video on how to build it!! I love those. Have learned so much from youtube, I hate to admit! Made hard cider in the fall from a bunch of apples and followed the youtube directions the entire time.
