How do you keep them protected at night, though? Just keep the whole thing inside a strong gated area? Make a DIY doggie door lock?

Put it inside an enclosed area. I guess you could make a door for it too. Actually I could see making a door out of hardware cloth and frame it. That would be pretty simple.
