I have chain link for my ducks/chickens but most nights they are locked in the coop which is all wood and only has 2 windows covered with glass in inclimate weather and also with hardware cloth screen. The key to using chain link is running electric fence along the very bottom and then in 2 inch increments about 3 or 4 strands high. One at the very top is also helpful. Electric is cheap and easy to install. One thing to think about is the spacing. if they get shocked in the face they back up...if the get shocked anywhere behind their ears they will spring ahead. Hope this helps.

** This method only works if there are no overhanging trees**

I know it is lost lives but trial and error is sometimes necessary. Don't let people make you feel guilty. Hey, you fed the wild life....what is the difference between a raccoon and your own dinner plate? All animals have a purpose and as long as they are not "wasted" I see it all as the circle of life. As long as you are doing your personal best than no one can ask for more. I agree that a replacement would be better sooner than later. If you are ok with offspring it is generally easier to introduce animals of the opposite sex IMO.

Sorry for rambling.....good luck to you.

Thank you for your responses. We do have a coop, but I believe this happened in the early morning. We are now locking them in the coop at night. In addition, we have added locks to our gates in case it might have been a person. The other duck appears to be improving, but I am still looking for a new duck friend for him.

I lost several ducks to a weasel a few years ago. I actually trapped one of them, so I am sure it was the culprit. The dead birds were left behind, headless, and the injured birds all had neck wounds. I found one duck carcass hidden in a hole between boulders about 100 ft from the duck house--the weasel had cached some of his extra kill.

A weasel can enter your duck enclosure through a very small opening. They are good at climbing, and being related to otters, they also swim.
