Went out to care for my ducks this morning to find a male and female (Mallard, adult) had escaped the enclosure in the night. After putting out some feed I noticed the female was hissing at me, which is abnormal for her as she doesn't have any babies or eggs at the moment. Then I noticed the top of her bill looked almost as if it had been flipped up on the edges with an indentation in the middle, with a small about of blood coming from her nostrils. To be more descriptive, it looks as if someone pressed down on the center of her bill and the sides of it flipped up/turned wrong side out. (I am thinking she may have been bitten by a snapping turtle.)
She went right to the feed and I watched her eat with no problem but I am sure she is in pain. I have separated her and the male (her partner) in the covered duck run with plenty of food, water, and comfy straw to sleep in.
I am wondering if I should try and catch her and press/flip her bill back into place? Or should I leave it for fear of causing more harm, possibly cracking or breaking her bill? I have no experience with this type of injury and I have no vets near by that do care for ducks, so that is out of the question. I would appreciate any advice!!! Thank you!!
