duck with swelling beneath her vent

I am happy to report that the swelling has gone down in size. It's about half the size of what it was yesterday. I treated her with the vetericyn today so hopefully that will help it to continue to heal. I know we aren't out of the clear yet but it looks like we are heading that direction. Thanks again for everyone's input and help. I will continue to keep you updated.

Two nights ago we did a bath again (I've doing those for the past 5 nights) then I cleaned the area with peroxide and put triple antibiotic ointment on the area. It was the only stuff that I had at the house and I figured at that point it was worth trying because it wasn't getting better on it's own. Last night after seeing that the swelling had gone down significantly, I used the veterycin and the triple antibiotic ointment again. This morning swelling is about have the size it was last night and is about the size of a quarter, so I think I will keep with that routine. Also, she has been getting vitamins and probiotics in her water and I've been keeping her hut as clean as possible. She isn't laying yet but I'm very happy with the progress so far.

Do all but the peroxide, although peroxide is great for cleaning out a wound first time it actually hinders normal healthy tissue from growing back so just leave out the peroxide from now on and use the Veterycin. But love to see how well she is doing your doing an awesome job.

She is still improving. the swelling is down to about the size a nickel and is starting to lighten to a light pink instead of the dark pink. I'm still doing the warm baths followed by cleaning it with the veterycin and triple antibiotic ointment and I'm still giving her extra vitamins and probiotics in her water. She still isn't laying. Should I still worry about her being egg bound? Or would she be displaying other symptoms by now?

I think by now she would be having other symptoms. Is she molting? that could be one reason why she isn't laying. Glad to hear the swelling has gone down so much. When was the last time she laid an egg?

Went back and read she is just 7 months old so probably not molting, could just be her system trying to get back to normal from what ever happened and egg laying got laid on the way side till this issue is resolved. It takes a lot to lay an egg probably a good thing she hasn't with the swelling that was going on.

Thanks for the information, Miss Lydia. I just wanted to make sure that the possibility of her being egg bound wasn't a concern anymore. The swelling was went down a little more today. It's between the size of a dime and nickel in terms of the diameter and isn't as deep. Also, it's softer. I'm still treating it with the veterycin and triple antibiotic ointment after a warm bath so I'm hopeful that it will heal completely.
