Duckling attacked by ants during hatching - please help!

The duckling has dried off and fluffed up a bit. Still fairly docile but talking and moving its head around now. It still has its legs tucked up in the hatching position. In addition to the damage to the bill it also has a red bite mark on one of the wings so I have put some antiseptic on that too. Poor thing. I really hope that it makes it.

Miss Lydia, I wasn’t sure what to do about the exposed yolk sac until it could be absorbed. What would you suggest doing? It is smaller than it was earlier on.

The duckling seems to have gotten a bit cold this past hour. He is in a box on a heat pad. The thermometer says 36 degrees (Celsius). Have put a thicker towel over the top of the box to try warm him up a bit.

Will try go back to sleep for a bit before I check on him next - it is 4.50am here in Australia!

I'd put the baby in a little bowl on a DRY paper towel until she has absorbed all the yolk. Do this so she can't move around too much and knock off the yolk sac.
If you have a box, even a good size shoe box that you can put the heating pad in put a towel over part of the top of the box to help hold in the heat.

If you've got a tote like you'd use to pack away Christmas decorations it would make a good brooder. You don't need a heat lamp you know. You can use a regular incandescent light bulb and shine in there. I use a clear tote box (so I can see inside) with a gooseneck desk lamp hanging over the side of the box. I put a towel over the top of the tote to keep in the heat. I wish I had better pictures of my set up!

The duckling started breathing quite heavily and not being very vocal so I went out and took one of the other ducklings from the mama duck and brought it inside to put next to him. The breathing is still very fast and shallow but has slowed down considerably.

Thats smart thinking! Shes not panting is she?

its been about 15 hours? You could mix a cup of warm water and a tablespoon of honey, corn syrup, or brown sugar and very carefully dip the tip of her bill in it, She should instantly respond and take tiny sips
Dont force because if she inhales any liquid she might not recover
