Hello! I am new to this place, and I really didn’t know where else to ask, but I am worried about one of my ducklings named Elphie. I got her about 25 days ago, and I think she was only a couple days old maximum when I got her and another duckling I’ve named Daphne.. I am extremely new to ducks but as of recent Elphie has been making weird breathing noises and movements. About two days ago she was acting fine and then all of the sudden I could hear her breathing as if it was a whistling noise whenever she exhaled. I got her some water and she drank it, but still it didn’t stop. It came and went but I’ve tried keeping an eye on her, but this morning when I came to replace water+ food she was making little jerky motions as if she was making a hiccup motion or choking? It only happened about four times before she kept moving and walked over to the water and I could still sort of hear her breathing like a whistle, and I got her some fresh water but had to get to school. Is there anything I can do to help? I feed her duck feed specifically for ducks, and replace water as often as I can. Does she need grit? More water? I use wood chips I think, and I don’t know if she has been eating them either. Or is this maybe sickness I should get checked out? Please— I need help and honestly I care about her a lot and don’t want to come home one day to her being gone. If anyone can help me out here I’d appreciate it so so much. :(

is her water deep enough for her to stick her head in to clean out her nares ( like nostrils)
and yes they need grit if they eat anything other than their regular duck feed.
what duck feed are you giving them is it pellets or crumbles, and what treats?

Yes— I’d say so. I switch out her water regularly, around twice or three times a day and it’s deep enough for her whole head to fit in for now. We also found out she is male, and I’m wondering if it could be her voice/vocal cords changing? Where can I find grit and how exactly do I give it to them? Is it just sand, or is there a special grit for them? I am giving them the Purina Duck Feed Pellets, and haven’t gotten the chance to give them treats yet. I’d like to get grit for them first so I can begin giving them a more diverse diet. I want the best for them, for sure.

ok great so grit is really little rocks lol it’s crushed granite and comes in a bag different sizes like chick grit is tiny bits. it helps them break down the food they eat so they can digest it ( since they don’t have teeth) i get it at tractor supply but also if they live outside they can get grit from the soil
