My 2 week old duckling has been panting when he lays down, he eats fine, drinks fine, runs around with the others, and swims and cleans himself just as much as the others. They go outside on beautiful days and come inside at night , they stay in a brooder with a heat lamp, but I put a 60 watt build instead of a 150 because it's been warmer. But when he's up and walking around or swimming he's fine, he only pants when he's laying down. Also he's about twice the size of my other 2 could it simply be his size?

panting means it is too hot, I live in Los Angeles and it has been hot check to see if legs oe beak is very hot then it has temperature maybe an infection. baytril issued by a Vet. A ducking is different care

Check the temperature in the brooder - a larger duckling would not need it as warm, I think. And sometimes we don't realize just how hot it is under that lamp. Is there room in the brooder for the duckling to move away to a cooler spot? I must say, and no insult meant to the duckling, that they do not always read the books that say that they move away from the heat lamp if they are too hot.

Another thing that causes ducklings to pant is stress. And another is clogged nares. Head washing helps the latter.
