Hi. I have a ducking pipping the small end of an egg. It made a hole yesterday morning (30+ hours ago), but hasn’t made any more progress. I misted it, and when I held it momentarily it was pecking on the same end, but other side. It’s chirping, but it’s peck was light. Any suggestions? Should I assist or wait? Thanks

I am going back and forth in my mind. I took tweezers and broke back a little of the shell late last night and there was still a vein so I decided to wait, but it’s pecking and not getting anywhere.

I’m wondering how long the poor fellow can live in that egg shell. I’d think three days maximum from first external pipping?

if it's trying like that I would think it has to get out - where are the duck people here? maybe open the shell in slightly different spot?

Can I see a picture? Go ahead and try to pick off the shell with tweezers where it's head is, but do not try to assist the chick with getting out of the egg. I had a chick hatch at the wrong end and it took about a day to actually get halfway out of the shell... Hope this helps!

Especially if you saw blood, that means wait!
Ducklings can take 40-48 hours from external pip. And remember, that's in normal circumstances, when the air cell has been used for its first breaths. This one skipped the air cell day, so it could be a while longer. As long as he bill is clear and he can breath, I'd give it more time.
