Duckling with birth defect (looks like scoliosis)

He hatched with severe wry neck (I think it was actually a growing deformity, not actual wry neck). It progressively got worse with age to the point where his head almost dragged on the ground. And he passed at about 10 months old from natural causes (assuming there was more wrong with him that we couldn't see on the outside. I couldn't bring myself to necropsy him after he passed).

Be sure to supplement vitamins and be sure his food and water is close by and where he can reach. That way he doesn't go without food or water simply because of his deformity.

My guy’s name is Tony but it isn’t sticking, everyone calls him Crooked
(In our Dutch dialect which makes sound even meaner!)

His body is interesting, he’s got his neck offset to the left but it points forward and while it’s lower so far it’s off the ground! But his leg deformity is causing the big issues, cuz he has trouble standing. I have him in hobbles and I’m designing a harness of some sort to keep them pointed forward.

Thank god he can eat and drink on his own! If he ever gets to a point where he can’t I think that’ll be where I have to step in, but I’m hoping it doesn’t come to that.

Did you do anything in attempt to straighten him out?

Quick question about supplements:

The health store in my town has two kinds of nutritional yeast. One is regular, and has only a small amount of niacin (5%). The other is sort of a “jacked up” version of it with all these extra added vitamins. Like it has 50% niacin! But i was scared of it being waaaaay too heavy for my duckies (4.5 weeks) so i didn’t get either and stuck with the nutritional yeast I’ve been feeding them since they hatched (18%)

However, with Crooked having his leg problems I know there’s vitamins recommended so maybe I should switched to the jacked up nutritional yeast?

I did. I tried a few different homemade braces. The first wasn't comfortable for him as it made him flip around alot. The second one I tried he simply didn't seem to like as he laid down a lot more often. So I opted to forget the brace and not try to straighten him out. He seemed happier being crooked and could eat and drink without issues so I figured it would be best not to interfere.

They nutritional yeast should be fine. You can also supplement with poultry vitamins. I would have to check my label but they make a vitamin and mineral supplement specially for waterfowl and poultry. So you don't have to guess the doses or make up your own formula.

You can also feed peas, mashed hard boiled egg, and romaine lettuce as treats.
