Duckling with injured bill

I am not sure what happened to this week old call duck. I think he may have caught his bill underneath a piece of hardware cloth. He seems to be drinking and eating okay, but definitely looks painful. He is not used to being handled and I don't want to stress out him and mom more than need be, but also don't want to lose him. What should I do??

He's looking pretty good, we were already planning to go on vacation for a week, and just got back. The sitter made sure to change out their water every day, but we never applied anything to it. It looks like he has an "underbite" though. He is developing at the same rate as the others, so I am not concerned about his ability to eat/drink/bathe.
