Ducklings about the hatch, help!

Nemo continues to do well. He is eating and drinking by himself mostly. When he poops now, he all of a sudden backs up three-four big steps, then goes.! Is this ok, or a sign of something intestinal or neurological?

Great job, Ducky Momma!! Nemo is absolutely adorable!!!

The backing up before pooping is totally duck normal! Natural instincts to back out of the nest to poop so they don't sleep in it is my thought on it... but don't think I have ever seen a duckling NOT do it... :D

Btw, they will poop on brooder walls because of this, lol...

Thank you. I am fine with him pooping on the walls and where ever he needs to. So happy his systems are working. Right now he is in a clear storage bin. I have a heat light, but it was super hard getting a steady temp. I put the incubation lid/heater on top of the storage bin. It only covers about half, so he can still move in and out of the heated area. I have been able to maintain a steady 90 degrees by 2 thermometers all day in different spots. When I get home, I'll get a better setup for him.

It doesn't have to be 90° in the whole area, just as long as the hottest spot is 90° and he can move out to cooler area when he wants then he will be fine... ducklings are much less sensitive about heat than chicks... that thick down really does a lot for him... :)

I know most keep their brooders at 90 but I have always kept mine at 85 to start then you do drop that by 5* each week there after till he is in room temps. The more you get him out on nice days the better he will acclimate to being out doors when time comes. They are really tough lil ones my mamas take hers swimming when it was in the 60's and I worried but they all did fine not that I'm saying you should put him out in water at 60 degrees but they are strong lil buggers. She also gets her oils on her babies while they are under her but if you begin putting him in the sink at around a week he'll begin preening and his feathers will begin to get more water repellent as he grows in his new feathers. . Nice warm water for swimming it's so much fun to watch them play submarine.

Be sure to keep those pics coming.

Thanks so much for all the help. Nemo is a great little baby. It's so cool to see that he already knows how to "duck" in so many ways. He started preening himself, and it is super cute
