I was able to get them to take the pain medicine, if it tastes as bad as it smells I may not be able to get their beaks open next time! I then gave some water with a syringe and it was eagerly swallowed. I was even more encouraged when we put them in the bath and they were able to lay on the water and drink with no problem. I have raised the feed and added another feeder hanging from the side of the cage. I’m adding a second tub this evening. If I have to, I will segregate the 2 ducks and feed them in the ‘swimming’ water. The kids are out of school today sick, but they have been so great helping hold birds and carry them to the new area. The runners are much easier and calmer to handle than my male Pekin who just finished up treatment for a foot wound last week.
That is what I had to do with Daisy, because she wouldn't or couldn't eat and I obviously couldn't throw grain in there 'cuz she wouldn't be able to get it she couldn't see also it would float to the bottom so what I did is I boiled hard-boiled eggs and I mash them and I made a hard-boiled sandwich and smushed the sandwich :hugs:hugstogether really hard like squished it like a pancake then I would break pieces off and throw it in the water at her and she would grab it and eat it and I also gave her lots of vitamin I did the human infant vitamins. I would also throw pieces of lettuce but anything that would float so she could get it... I must have done something right she is almost fully recovered. Good luck I hope all works out for you and your duckies. :hugs

When to euthanize its completely up to you. Some have the time to care for servery hurt animals, others do not. My rule of thumb - if they are willing to (even spoon feed), I am willing to give them a chance. I have used Vetericyn Poultry Care Spray for Chickens for open wounds as well as Green Goo first aid for cuts. In addition, I have given mine antibiotics (Keflex) to prevent infection and kept them on vitamin water until healed. If they are still eating, I would worry about infection. Best of luck to your ducks, they are tough animals and hopefully yours will recover!
