Ducks ?

Just want to say to any one who is considering ducklings that they can drown. We just lost one of our muskogies because he fell into the water but couldn't swim or get out!
so be careful with the babies....

Until they get their adult feathers, they can get waterlogged and drown. If they are raised by momma, she will A) rub some of her feather oil off on them when they get under her, making them a LITTLE more waterproof and B) make them get out of the water before they get soggy.

I have a book " Barnyard in your Backyard" That has A chapter About Ducks and Geese that gives resons they can die including drowning.

Wild water fowl generally lay their eggs in the water, like what your describing. This was probably the beginnings of a clutch of eggs.

Good Luck With Your Hatch!

Runners are beautiful, wonderful egg layers, and comical to watch - they looking like running bowling pins! And they come in sooo many different colors! My runners lay a beautiful light blue/green egg.

I also really miss having my Welsh Harlequins. My girls layed eggs all through the winter without supplemental lighting. Not sure this is normal, but they were excellent! They are just as good of layers as the Khaki Campbell, supposedly slightly less flighty, and slightly larger.

Here are pictures of my pair of Welsh Harlequins I had, as well as my pair of Fawn and White Indian Runners, and a little Blue Swedish mix girl. The Harlequins and Runners come from Holderreads Waterfowl Farm and Preservation Center in Oregon.

If you want friendly though, as in not timid, you might be better off with a larger breed who lays only slightly fewer eggs. Campbells, Runners, Harlequins - in my experience - are more hand shy. I have heard many minis are quite friendly. As far as other breeds, I think the Anconas are super beautiful! They are white with black patches. Also like the Magpie, Cayuga, Saxony...

Does anyone now what type of Ducks are in the pics in the artical "Poultry Husbandry in a changed Energy Future" in Backyard Poultry Dec 2007\\ Jan 2008 issue? There sort of tan, fawn color and I think there really cute! ( And I'm only am getting ducks if I can confence my mom)
