Runners are beautiful, wonderful egg layers, and comical to watch - they looking like running bowling pins! And they come in sooo many different colors! My runners lay a beautiful light blue/green egg.
I also really miss having my Welsh Harlequins. My girls layed eggs all through the winter without supplemental lighting. Not sure this is normal, but they were excellent! They are just as good of layers as the Khaki Campbell, supposedly slightly less flighty, and slightly larger.
Here are pictures of my pair of Welsh Harlequins I had, as well as my pair of Fawn and White Indian Runners, and a little Blue Swedish mix girl. The Harlequins and Runners come from Holderreads Waterfowl Farm and Preservation Center in Oregon.
If you want friendly though, as in not timid, you might be better off with a larger breed who lays only slightly fewer eggs. Campbells, Runners, Harlequins - in my experience - are more hand shy. I have heard many minis are quite friendly. As far as other breeds, I think the Anconas are super beautiful! They are white with black patches. Also like the Magpie, Cayuga, Saxony...
