Sure, take him in if you can. However, keep in mind that you risk your girl every time you take her to the park to swim. If she bonds to the other duck, and she probably will, because he is of her kind and they bond easily with each other, she will swim off. Then there is the risk of her getting eaten by turtles - they will go after the whole duck. So... see if you can rescue him, but keep them home in some sort of secure area with a good fence and their own wading pool to play in. There is also risk of disease or parasites at the park that is much higher than keeping her home and not just from him, but from wild birds that pass by. We had a lot of starlings drop by last winter when it was very cold and they left me bird mites to deal with this spring. I do hope you can encourage him to be your pet.

yeah your right. sometimes i do worry if she'll gradually decide not to leave the park each time i take her, and the incident with the turtles was a nightmare! i want to install a pond in my yard in the future, but right now she only has a kiddie pool that gets dirty very fast. i also take her swimming in the big pool, but im afraid the chlorine is bad for her after too long. its a shame because i never had a problem with the turtles before, they just seem to be multiplying... in population and guts! but i will try to kidnap him asap

ok, first attempt to steal her boyfriend. i took petrie to the park and tried to wait until he was comfortable enough around us again, then he ran over to her and she ran away like "it aint happenin!!" and once he saw she wasnt putting out he swam away lol i mean i thought it would be easy because shes always trying to seduce my boyfriend lol so i tried feeding him some lettuce but he wouldnt touch it if i threw it closer to me. while i was there, this lady came over and told me she's been trying to catch him too, and that she saw a man drop him off about a year ago lol i will have to try that 2-cage idea, because he's a clever bird!!

if he has been out there for a year though, he might be happy. i dont know if it will be too stressful for him if i got him to my yard....

maybe try frozen peas to lure him....and if you have a smallish dog crate (or borrow one) put your duck in the crate so the male can see her and get a piece of fencing, chicken wire or such and make a circle around your crate with large opening for him to walk thru. when he goes to see her close the fencing.? I did that before. Now they just follow me for peas. lol.

ps: slow and steady herding works best if you can corner him somehow. I would think if you take a roll of chicken wire to the park that you'd have some volunteers. and take LOTS of peas! the frozen bagged kind.

I doubt seriously he likes being out there. Probably the reason he's so skittish is that not everyone at the park is kind to him and he doesn't know who to trust. Once you bring him in and give him a good home and safety, he will probably settle in and be VERY happy. Good luck--I hope you're able to get him.
