Dumb Catch Phrases

I would agree with you that languages do naturally shift and change.. at a certain rate. Many languages, in fact, share common influences.
However, the culture that originally spawned ebonics (but by no means are solely responsible for its propagation) is a very new culture. Prior to a hundred years ago, their ancestors were speaking the entirely different language of their homeland. That's what I meant about not seeing a set cultural history, or any entrenchment.

As I said... people who have no belief in God, and that includes any god, are often saying "Oh My God" with incredible frequency. That's the part I find senseless. They could say "Oh my nothingness" or "Oh my science" and all would make sense to me. I mean this lightheartedly, btw, whatever floats a persons boat, is fine with me. Just as long as they make sense doing it

AWESOME and AMAZING! Neither one means anything! Something can be awesomely good or bad, same for amazing. Aghhhhh!!!

Well see, that's why people incorrectly using language is a problem in the first place. Both of those words do mean things. To be filled with awe or amazed is something you should reserve noting for a time when you really do feel it.

that is debatable. There are cultures and subcultures created every day. That is like saying there is no such thing as southern culture in the southern united states because everyone there descended from another culture a few hundred years ago.

It is technically possible to have a culture within a culture. IT is a really strange paradox here in the united states since it is are relatively new country, layered with several cultures from different native cultures to the many different immigrant cultures than came to dominate at one time or another at one part of the country to another, and how they over lap to form their own little unique mish mash. Even our president is a symbol of mixed races and coming from a mixed cultural back ground.

that article is pretty good and talking about the different definitions of eubonics.

but yes I can see how it can get annoying. some people take it and run with it, but you see people go crazy with slang in any language that just gets obnoxious.

Wait isn't that the point of this thread?

I think I just gave myself a complex.

dang it.

I couldn't agree more!!! What the heck are they trying to say, "my bad" what? Why can't people say, "Oh no! I made a mistake!" Yes, and "baby daddy/momma" is like nails on a chalkboard. "My baby daddy", ugh, it just sounds so, incorrect.

Also, "back in the day" is a good one, but it doesn't bother me as much as the above two.

I absolutely can't stand the word "ain't". My husband and stepson also both say, "I seen..". Another nails on the chalkboard phrase. I always ask them how do they seen? I have corrected them a gazillion times to say, "I saw..." but they still say it.

Might as well.....
What the heck does this mean....really. Might....As.....Well......
Its so dumb!

I grew up in South Eastern Massachusetts. My mother's side bastardizes the English language. For example.....the boat uv yuz. Translation...The both of you. This makes me cringe. Oh and my mother pronounces door as doe-wah...same with four....foe-wah.
And I can't have a conversation with my sister without needing a drink afterwards. She says "know what I'm sayin'" at the end of every other sentence. UGH!!!!!
Oh and "knock it off" knock what off what?????
