Dumb dumb question

Yes people show animals. All kinds actually.
My aunt raised Rhodesian Ridgebacks (dogs). Showed them. They had their own handlers for the show ring.
As a child I loved to go!
It was hard for me to understand that she would put down any puppies that weren’t perfect. The swirls on their backs had to meet SOP’s for the breed.
She is a kind person who is dedicated to the breed. She explained to me (as a child) that if she could spay or neuter the pups for pets she would. That she couldn’t trust people to be responsible and that it would ruin the breed.
I used to go to bird shows too. To me birds are the most beautiful things ever!

Where do they find the time? So one more question then I'll leave this alone for today. What's the difference in a show chicken and what I have in my coop? Maybe i need to find a chicken show on YouTube
Show chickens are expensive and meet the SOP
My backyard chickens some are mutts off a friends ranch. The others I purchased my SLW my EE my ISA (this is a test lol) they are a certain breed but clearly not show quality.
Think of it this way.
If you purchased a poodle from a breeder. It would have papers that showed it’s lineage (family history) and you’d have to register it with the AKA (American Kennel Club) in order for it to be a papered purebred.
Or you could buy a poodle on line or from a individual.
It’d still be a poodle but not the same.
Or you could go to the dog pound a get a dog that looks like a poodle.
My chickens I purchased. Some I got from the pound.
Make sense? (Too lengthy sorry)

Yes it does. I hate commercials breeding. I wish I would have never bought hatchery chicks and will never again. But if I had I wouldn't have the flock i do today. Personally I prefer the "mutts" they seem to be healthier and hardyer than the standard breeds. All my mixes are fantastic birds... gorgeous and good layers and friendly

Name a breed of animal, and there are shows and/or competitions for them.
That ain't no lie.
Bought a guinea pig at auction last year. After the sell the seller started telling me he had just placed in back to back shows up in Iowa. He was registered but I never transferred it over or anything.
Never knew there was a cavy show circuit.

I used to read about hardware cloth here and they were using it to predator proof the runs!:eek:I didn't like to say that a mouse could eat it's way througha piece of cloth, never mind a weasel

No such thing as proof really, they can chew through wood and concrete too... but it IS a very effective deterrent and HAS saved many a life.

Layers of predator control and deterrents are needed in some locations more than others. I will continue to use it, especially in areas that are prone to have a raccoon reach through and decapitate a bird without making entrance. Many things that happen are crimes of opportunity. Make it less easy and they move onto the next unsuspecting victim.

I wonder if my fair-birds meet the standard?the ribbons in the background of my profile pic are the ones I got for my duck.at the fair he had a breeding temper tantrum and tried to eat my hair,I let him because it didn't hurt(he had never seen a female duck before)

There you go, a classic example of lost in translation.:gig I keep forgeting that some words in English have meanings and inferences that they don’t have in American.
I should explain better when I post, but forget.:(

The OP posted about abbreviations that she didn’t understand and consequently had no idea what people were talking about.
Me, being British, have had similar problems with some American phrases; one of which is ‘hardware cloth’.
I used to read about people covering their runs with ‘hardware cloth’.
In the UK, cloth of any sort is like clothing, cotton, wool, whatever, but the word 'cloth' isn’t used to describe metal.
So, as far as I was concerned people were covering their runs in pieces of cloth (clothing, curtains) bought from a hardware shop which of course won’t keep any predators out.:D
One day I looked on the Internet for what Americans call ‘hardware cloth’ only to find that it is what is called 'weld-mesh fence' or 'welded panels', in the UK. which of course is made from metal and not from cloth. Then I understood and I agree, weld mesh fence, particularly types with small squares is ideal predator proofing.

I hope I’ve made myself clear this time.
