If I buy 7 chicks, and vaccinate all of them, can I add a non vaccinated chick, or two to the brooder? I ordered 7, but two of the breeds I wanted were not available, so I might buy them from a farm, or people I know. Would it be ok to do this? Could I vaccinate them if they are more than one day old, because someone on BYC said they vaccinate birds of all ages? The vaccination is Marek's by the way.

I have been told that all Mareks vaccines are shedding, meaning that any chicks not vaccinated would pick up the disease from the vaccinated chicks. Also, there are many different strains of Mareks disease so even if you vaccinate against it, your birds may pick up a different strain. A wild bird could poop in your run and give your birds Mareks, its all around them. I prefer to let my birds build up a natural immunity to it, even if it means losing a bird or two along the way.

So, do you recommend vaccinating, or not? I was planning on dong it myself because people recommended that I should.

I wouldn't vaccinate, especially if you plan in bringing in unvaccinated chicks from another source.

Is the chance of getting Marek's high if I don't vaccinate? I live in a town with very few chickens by the shore, and I am only going to have a flock of 7-10 birds. I might show them in 4-H sometimes, but I guess that's taking a risk right there huh? I was told you can vaccinate at any age, is this true?

Roosters aren't the only ones that chest bump/jump on other chicks as chicks right? Hens will do it to?

(please say yes otherwise I have 12 roosters and no hens)
