Well hopefully it leeds to a dumb answer. One of my Leghorn chicks keeps strtching its neck and opening it's mouth wide like its trying to caw.. gosh I don't know how else to explaine it?
He/she is only about a week and a half old?
Is this normal?

I sure hope thats all it is... she's doing it about every 30 seconds? She's sampled some worms so far and some oats. I'm going to buy them some grit tomarow...

I'm new to raising chicks too, but from what I've heard, if they are eating anything other then their crumbles (or yogurt) they should be on grit. I've also heard that it's best to wait till they are a bit older before they start eating treats.
Good luck!! What breeds are you raising?

Not a dumb question.

Every 30 seconds I'd worry about - Anything other than normal chick feed or yogurt needs grit added to the diet at a young age. Try carefully rubbing its throat or giving it water see if that helps.

I have looked and looked for grit without calcium with no luck, and I live in a pretty big rural community. Can I used sand, and if I buy a bag of sand, how would I know that it is "clean" ?

You might have to check a couple of feed stores for chick grit. One of the two that are close to hand here carries it and the other one (my fav. store) will order it for me, but doesn't stock it.
