Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat - Part 2 : Chicken Boogaloo.

If you go to the broiler houses they still produce birds in less than 5 weeks we have a bunch around here and you can't tell me that a chick at 5 weeks old hasn't been modified some how I've never seen one yet that does and I know a few people that have broiler houses they get the chicks feed and all and I ask about getting some chicks ? Not allowed!

They have just been selectively bred for years and years to grow as fast as possible and plus they have food in front of them constantly 24/7 and don't move at all. It's no wonder they grow so fast. That said, it's possible they may use some supplement or something similar to hormones and antibiotics that is legal. Or they may use them illegally. But most don't.

And you can buy the chicks from hatcheries

Corn chips with a gluten-free label on them. Makes me laugh everytime I see it. Of course they are gluten free. Corn doesn't have gluten to begin with.

Commercial poultry farms don't actually own the birds. The corporations like Tyson and Butterball actually own the birds. The farms are paid to raise the chicks till they are market weight. The breeding program for Cornish Cross is a heavily guarded industry secret. Nobody knows exactly what has gone into the breeding lines. Chicks can be purchased from most hatcheries, though.
Cornish Cross are not genetically engineered or given any sort of hormones, but they are bred to grow incredibly fast and can be market weight in as little as 6 weeks.

Not down here I stoped at one and they said no they would not sell any chicks we have about 30 broiler houses in the area and none can or will sell I know I used to work with one that has 4 houses

They may not sell you them because they only hatch chicks to grow them out for the company. What we mean is the many hatcheries open to the public, you can order online or find one near you and visit it

Yes this is one of the factory hatcheries I visited they wouldn't let me in the door but ask anyway they dont sell to the public that was a few years ago because I was thinking about raising some then

Quote: And you snicker about gluten free corn? EVERY domesticated crop or farm product is genetically modified! Has been for millinnia, up till now they just used a slower, clumsier method[ they called it "selective breeding". That corn you speak of cannot even reproduce itself successfully without our help. Left to it's own the breed would probably be extinct in a very few decades.

Even your dog is genetically modified wolf.

There is a difference though, between genetically modified and selectively bred. Selective breeding crosses plants or animals to produce offspring with the traits they desire and is very slow and clumsy as you said. Genetic engineering is done in a lab and they actually splice genes from unrelated species or just tamper with the genes in general to produce things thats otherwise could not exist in nature. Many of our crops have been modified this way and some people think it can cause all kinds of health issues. I personaly am not sure but I try and stay away from it as much as I can. Not easy to do these days unless you grow it yourself with heirloom seeds.
