Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat - Part 2 : Chicken Boogaloo.

True about my grandma's sense of humor. Last Easter, she found a farm animal sound book (targeted at 1-2 year olds) and said "I used to read this to all of you kids, don't you remember?" Of course none of us did, so we told her we didn't. "I don't know how long I'll be around, but you all used to love this book. Can I read it to you all?"
No one had the guts to say "no", so she read the book of 'moos' and 'oinks' to the six of us (ages 15-22). My aunt was walking by and heard her making animal noises in the other room, totally thought she'd lost it. But as soon as it was over, my grandma smiled and went back upstairs like nothing had happened. My cousin remarked "I can't tell if it's horrible or cute, how in touch grandma is with her mortality."
So yeah, my grandma has her moments...

Man I like your grandma she is a sport!!

So my dad was talking to his brother (my uncle [he is watching my flock while I'm on vacation]) and the conversation went on like this:
Dad: They lay 3 to 4 eggs a day
Uncle J: Sooo.... 3 to 4 from each hen?
*Me in background laughing hysterically!

And he grew up around chickens!

Got one of my coworkers on Wednesday. I brought in a dozen and sold them to a coworker. she thought that I had a rooster to get the girls to lay eggs. Really took her a while for her to really wrap around the idea that chickens can lay eggs without a rooster around to do his part and that you could have eggs that would never hatch if you incubated them. Mind you this woman has given birth to 2 kids and was having trouble grasping the idea that they really need a rooster's contribution of DNA into the egg to get a chick.

wish I could have blown her mind you don't need a male bee to get a male bee

Well, if you think about it... She had 2 kids. They came out of her body. She needed a "rooster" to contribute DNA to that project. Eggs come out of a chicken's body. I can see where it would make sense to someone that a rooster would need to be present. People who have never been on a farm or exposed to those who raise chickens (or other food animals for that matter) have no way of knowing unless we educate them.

Some no matter how hard you try cannot be educated because it says different online!! SMH

But that's kind of where the whole 'the egg is like a chicken's period' thing can help. I know it's not exactly accurate, but it helps them understand the whole concept of how a hen can lay an egg without a rooster.

Well, if it's on the internet, it's gotta be true, right?

I think it may depend on the gender of the person doing the explaining...

Some of us can relate to that analogy better than others.
