Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat - Part 2 : Chicken Boogaloo.

Not really, Lisa... since this thread is about absurd statements re: chickens. Big poultry is about as absurd as it gets. Now I'll go off topic. Big industry is dictating everything about agricultural practices in the farming industry these days. Including providing the GMO seed to the grain farmers, and providing the chemicals and the spray protocol. Many factory farmers don't have much say in how they manage their land.

I did not realize it went beyond chickens. This guy on the documentary felt trapped, like it was "sold" to him with only the best possible scenario, he signs contract, and then the jail cell door slams shut. He had something like quarter of a million mortgage on the houses, and was not paid enough to make it above poverty level. The poultry farmers were ****** off. Not just about money, but also conditions for chicks. It actually made me sympathize with the owner. He wanted to take steps to improve conditions, but was not allowed. Just depressing.

On the other hand, I read somewhere that with the current rate of world population growth, vs. Modern day agricultural and farming practices, there is a time in the future where earth is spent out. Simply not enough food to feed the masses.

I have a combination of reasons why I wish to be more self sufficient. That is one. BIBLICAL
prophecy another. I cannot tell the time, but it sure wont hurt to raise some food. And, we do not know who will be running our nation in the near future. And cost of groceries. And its good for us to be outside with animals. My THING so to speak. And if enough people raise chicks, right now 2%, it will inpact big business.

I love it. Buffy the vicious velociraptor.

See, very vicious. After the picture was taken she mauled a tomato.

Another neighbor loves my roosters and wants me to train them to walk over to her house at 5 A.M. to wake her up. (I let them out at 7.) She also freaked out and called me, frantic, one day.
Me: *Gets a call*
Her: "Your roosters!'
Me; "Huh? Are they in your yard?"
Her: "No! Are they dead!?"
Me: *Freaks out and looks for bodies* "I don't think so, why?"
Her: "They didn't crow!"
Yup..... They were watching geese fly over. Fine. I nearly had a heart attack until she said they didn't crow.

Several weeks ago, I met a man who raised poultry in one of the many poultry houses in my state, back when there was such a thing. At one time, my state had a thriving poultry "industry". (Not to mention dairy and meat cow farming, plenty of other farming, paper mills, shoe and textile factories... pretty much, every single one of those sources of earning a living have disappeared, or are in the process of doing so.) Any how... I asked him what kind of chickens he raised: His answer... "White ones!" Here's a man who earned his LIVING raising chickens, and he had no idea what kind they were. I asked him if they were meat birds or layers. He was able to tell me that they were being raised to be layers. He'd raise them till they were close to POL, then the company he worked for would pick them up, and take them to the layer houses.

Given the fact that someone who earned his living raising chickens was so woefully ignorant, it's no wonder that the rest of the city folks are out of touch with the food chain.

I had the exact same experience with a guy over in OH some years back. Advertised his spent layer hens and was selling them for a couple bucks each. The ad just said white layer chickens for sale and, at the time I didn't know they were from a poultry house. When I called I asked him the breed, expecting him to say "leghorns" or "California whites" or even "White Rocks" and he replied, "Oh, just white birds. I don't know the breed but I know they are white and they lay white eggs." I knew then that these birds were from a commercial operation and he confirmed it as such. I gave them a pass.

So, the next time someone says , "Well, everybody *knows* ....." (such and such), we can respond, "Yeah, just like everybody knows you need a rooster to get eggs. Hahahahahahaha!"
LOL yup!!! I will do that next time

The thin shelled eggs are probably coming from hens whose diets are deficient in calcium. Plus, uniformity in size and/or color comes from sorting the eggs after they're laid. A dozen of my eggs are a mixed bag: large small, blue, dark brown, beige, green, etc. With only 6 hens, I'd have to have a full fridge of old-ish eggs to end up with a uniform box.
That makes sense. I hope they get more calcium then haha and hmmm, that's interesting. So what do they do with the others then? Throw them out? Or probably just put them with other eggs of similar size and color? We have 8 hens so it would take a while for us to get uniform colors too. Although 6 of the 8 lay brown eggs so it wouldn't be too hard to get all brown eggs. Harder to get colored eggs or all the same shade of brown. We have 1 Barred Rock, 2 Black Australorps, 3 Buff Orpingtons, and 2 Easter Eggers. One EE lays a smallish/medium green egg and the other lays a medium/large (bigger than the other one), sometimes jumbo, blue egg. She used to consistently lay huge eggs but now lays more normal sized ones. But yeah anyway, it would take a while to get a uniform box but with as many birds as the factories have it probably takes no time at all. To get a dozen EE eggs would take probably just under a week but that's assuming they both lay every day, they're starting to take more breaks, also assuming we want both colors. If I wanted just the green or just the blue well that'd take almost 2 weeks since I only have 1 bird laying blue and 1 laying green

Correct me if am wrong, it seems like my Black Copper Marans eggs are more densed and creamy in textures and their shells are stronger in comparison to the rest of my chickens eggs (barred rocks, silver laced Wyandottes, leghorns, RIR, EE, BA & Blk sex links) and they are all fed the same feeds, do they probably eat more oyster shells and process their feed differently cause of their genetic make up? Sort of 2 guys eating the same stuff but one gets fat and the other skinny?
I'm the fat one.
My wife...the incredible cook/baker/candy maker...says that you eat with your eyes first so those beautiful brown eggs are better even if they taste the same as those plain old white ones :D
Ha ha ha am the skinny one, I eat everything insight including ice cream almost every night and my wife look at me in disgust, she claims she looks at food and she gains 10 lbs.

Forgot to reply to the other quotes lol whoops

Anyway, interesting about the texture and flavor. I think different hens do eat different amounts of oyster shell but also different amounts of the feed. Plus if they get to free range ever even for only a few hours or if there's grass, deep litter, or bare dirt, etc. In the run then there are probably bugs and other tidbits too for them to eat or if given treats/supplements and different hens all eat different amounts of that stuff.

As for the food. As a kid and all through high school and even early college i was always the skinny one, i literally like constantly ate and never gained any weight even though I also never exercised. Was always on the computer or phone etc. Now I've gained like 30-40 pounds over the last year or so. It's bad, trying to lose it haha of course my diet also changed, i eat onlyonly junk now so that's why I'm sure but still. And i just realized that of course in high school we had gym class and in college I had to walk around campus (even though it was a small campus) so I guess that counts as exercise and may contribute to the no weight loss. Now i dont really do anything. But of course it's also my metabolism i think. I used to have a really fast metabolism

Definitely the diet.  My husband doesn't like that my girls have such "tough" shells.  As a result, even though he eats usually after I go to bed for the day (I work nights) I will crack his eggs and put them in a Tupperware container for him.  LOL!!

LOL oh wow! I like the hard shells, means theyre getting enough calcium and nice and fresh
