Not sure how this thread turned from a 'stupid things about chickens' thread inot a chicken $$#!t and dog shooting thread, but I'm going to make an attempt to bring t back n course...

I have gotten the usual myths: "White hens lay white eggs, Brown eggs are better for you and so on. What I'm waiting for is what kind of remarks am I going to get when my Easter Eggers start laying?

I play tennis, and my coach is constantly saying, when I give him eggs from my BAs, why aren't they Black? They should be black! And if you spray painted the chickens blue, they should lay pink or blue eggs.

I try to explain, but it doesn't seem to work...

You should find someone with cayuga eggs and give him some. Just tell him you painted them up for him.

This thread is a riot! I am a new chicken mama and have gotten some excellent questions:

How long is a chicken pregnant?
Will the eggs hatch if you leave them in the coop?
How can you get eggs if you don't have a rooster?

There are others I can't remember right now. I suspect part of these silly questions is the fact that I live in a suburb in Southern California. Not exactly farm folks out here. Tee hee!

So now that everybody at my husband's work knows that every carton comes with at least one blue egg, I've gotten 4 new customers this week! Sold 4 dozen since last Friday, and I've got requests for another 3 dozen!

They love that little bit of something different.

- hens are productive (lay eggs) for 2-3 years, as they age will slow down, if that is what you mean pregnant.

-eggs will not hatched in the coop by itself, it has to be fertilized by a rooster and a hen has to sit on them(brooding) for 20-23 days.

- hens will lay eggs @maturity (point of lay) between 18-24 wks. Some early some later than that, wether there is a roo or not around. Eggs are their reproductive cell, just like a woman releasing reproductive egg cell once a month according to their fertility. Hope this answer some of your Qs. My wife & I were both from big cities didn't know a squat about chicken till we fell into it

Hey Spartan22. Thank you for your genuinely great answers to these dumb questions. I should have made it clear that these are silly questions that people have asked me about my chickens. I think they are quite hysterical. I must have read three books about chicken keeping before we adopted our little babies. I also regularly visited sites like BYC and others to gain additional knowledge so that I would be prepared for chicken keeping, and I guess to answer silly questions from friends and family.
